I think there is a world of different between a stupid joke and reality, and I think equating a rape joke to real rape is what is offensive. Off color humor is nothing new. And frankly, yes, making it about elves or fictional characters is pretty fucking different than saying "I'm going to rape (real person)."

I don't think you're a SJW for having that opinion. And I agree, in theory, with the reality of a concept of "rape culture" but I do not see his joke as a contribution to that. In bad taste, yes. Inappropriate, absolutely. Promoting rape? Nope.

His comment insisted on drugging some one and having sex with them NOT being rape. He basically said it's NOT rape. That comment could very well encourage some one to see that action as being okay because it's "not rape". Obviously he's not going to be magically make complete saints run around raping, but some one who was already wanting to do that now has EXTRA validation from some one in the world that what they want to do to some one is okay.

His comment did not "insist" on anything. Freeman insisted on the fact that sex with a drugged person is not rape about as much as I insist that a dead baby in a clown costume is funny when I make a joke about dead babies. (not that I do, but hypothetically)

Really? When he mocked anyone who would call it rape, and mocked them for being upset by it? That wasn't him OUTRIGHT SAYING that what he described isn't rape? How clear do you need him to be exactly?

do I mock a dead baby when I'm saying that it's funny? Am I not clear when I'm saying a dead baby is funny? Like, it's right there. That's literally what the joke is about.

I did not see him mock anybody. All I saw was him making an unfunny comment.

There doesn't have to be actual tangible equivalents of things/people mentioned in jokes to make them offensive.
E.g. I joke about rape being funny. Even if I'm not directing the joke at anyone in particular it's still mocking people who have been raped because I'm basically saying it's not a big deal.

Um no. Joking about a thing!=saying it's not a big deal.

Seriously? Are you not familiar with the concept of sarcasm? It's pretty common in humor and, well, everyday life. When my boyfriend farts in bed and I express exasperation and joke that I should make him sleep in the garage, it doesn't mean I actually plan to force him to sleep in the garage. It doesn't even mean I secretly want to force him to sleep in the garage or that I want to force ALL my boyfriends to sleep in the garage because I think that's a reasonable thing to do.

It is a joke. You may not like the joke or think it's funny, but it doesn't mean I'm abusing my boyfriend or that I'm encouraging other people to abuse their partners if they happen to fart in bed.
