OMFG. An Oliver Sacks secret. Now I can die knowing that I've seen it all.

But, for what it's worth, I'd love to have him as a doctor. I'd take him over House in a heartbeat.

OP

I highly recommend the book in the secret, it is his autobiography.
starphotographs: ...I'm not that bad, though. And I don't even light things on fire! Well, not regularly... (Izaya (devious))

EEEEE! Sacks! :D

I wish more people had his sense of wonder about brains that work differently from their own. The world would be a better place.

are there people who want House as a doctor

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I know some people who have chronic illnesses that want House as a doctor, just because they feel like he'd be able to figure out what's wrong/help cure them.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt Well I guess that kinda-sorta applies if you don't have a diagnosis, or have a very vague one (many autoimmune conditions), but if you are living with a diagnosed chronic illness you know what's up. You have to deal with it daily, and maybe you want someone's advice on how to manage it better, but it's probably incurable. Which isn't good television, and thus rarely comes up in the patient of the week. THAT is why it's never lupus, tbh.

idk I'd take him if I wasn't totally broke

at least he gets shit done?

I'd take him in a heartbeat. He knows what he's doing and i don't give a damn about his 'bedside manner' - if i were sick i'd want the blunt truth, not some round about bullshite.
starphotographs: I like him. He kind of looks and acts like one of my characters. (I did not know this when I started liking him!) (Victor (...>:|))

Gods, yes.

When it comes to doctor characters I always think of my friend's mom, who's a nurse, saying that the only one she would trust would be Dr Cox from Scrubs, for that reason.

Yes! Me too. I don't need sympathetic murmurings from a doctor (or, actually, anyone else) - just information.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
But a doctor who has both? Worth their weight in any currency, IMO.

Eh. Sympathy isn't really all that helpful. When i was in hospital a few years ago, i didn't want hand-patting and hugs, i just wanted information. DETAILED information. No 'sparing' of the patient.

If that's what someone needs, that's all good, but i'd rather hard truth and helpful details than anything else.

I made this secret b/c I have seen at least three different secrets stating this.

Secret 9 - Uncle Tungsten: Memories of a chemical boyhood (book) by Oliver Sacks

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-28 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the cover of the book "Uncle Tungsten: Memories of a chemical boyhood" by "Oliver Sacks". It has the blurbs "author of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat", "Intellectually entrancing and utterly winning." --The Globe and Mail, "Editors' Choice, New York Times Book Review", "Bestseller". It has the sepia-toned photograph of a young boy with light skin and short dark hair looking seriously off-screen and wearing a coat.]

Forget Dr. House! THIS is who I want for MY doctor! This is a secret because I am so neuro-typical it's not even funny. HIS BEDSIDE MANNER THO

I love Oliver Sacks.

That is all. He also has a really enjoyable way with words that I find enchanting. I want his brain, mostly.

Oh my God, yes. I've been listening to him a lot on RadioLab lately and he is absolutely one of my favorite people ever.
And my biggest science crush.
