I'm not a hardcore LOTR/Hobbit fan (I actually didn't know until recently that Tauriel wasn't even a character in the books and was made for the films), but speaking even as someone who gets irritated by romance subplots in movies very easily, I quite liked theirs. It had a lot more chemistry than any of the LOTR romances (and a lot of movie romances in general) and was well-done, but not particularly over-done. Also subverts some romance cliches, too, so that's always a plus. :)

I have heard that, and it excites me the most about their romance. (One of my favorite moments in the Mass Effect series is when f!Shep throws Kaidan over her shoulder and rescues him.) Well, beyond the fact that they're apparently adorable, which is something I look for and love. The art I've been seeing has really endeared them to me, and though I do think the existence of Tauriel/Kili makes Legolas/Gimli seem a bit less special, it's pretty cool that a lot of fandom seems to be embracing it. Elf/dwarf pairings are right up my alley, and if it isn't overdone then I'm not too opposed to them including it.

Eh, they're the first gay elf/dwarf pairing, then? :P (I actually quite like it when special, one-of-a-kind things are made not-so-special or one of a kind, but that's just me after years of Mary Sue-heavy fandoms).

But they are quite endearing. When they first meet, there's some pretty funny back-and-forth banter, and they do actually spend some time chatting and bonding over shared interests rather than just being some esoteric "love at first sight" stuff. Nothing particularly romantic actually happens in the movie beyond a single (and slightly-delusion) confession of love from one of them - it's just a lot of built-up chemistry, so it doesn't feel forced. :)
