Holiday Ranting and Venting Thread

Most of us have either gone home or are going to soon, and most of us probably have some family/friend frustration left over. So - rant and vent away! What irritated you, pissed you off, or otherwise upset you this holiday season?

Here's mine:

So, I've been sick for a while, and since I got to my mom's place, she's been constantly pushing various medicines on me. She's used to taking over a dozen pills a day (mostly in vitamins and other over the counter daily medicines), and doesn't get why I keep telling her that I don't want to take something unless it's absolutely necessary. I've been taking a generic anti-histamine, and occasionally some Nyquill or a different decongenstant when necessary, but otherwise avoiding things like vitamin pills and such. But she is persistent, so I eventually caved just to get her to back off (I should have known it wouldn't work, she practically has a pharmacy in vitamins and homeopathic medicines stashed under her bed so there's always something new she wants me to take).

The pills don't help, and my sickness has been getting worse, but still my mother pushes. I finally end up going to the doctor and getting an antibiotic prescribed, and my doctor also recommends a specific type of OTC decongestant to take, so I get those and take them, as well my mom's small army of pills.

Then last night I puked up pretty much everything, had other igestiv issues, and my entire body was shaking like crazy, and a lot of that is likely just due to conflicting medicines/too many pills. My mom's entire body chemistry has practically been replaced with all the vitamins and other random medicines she takes, but mine sure hasn't.

I finally put my foot down and say I'm only taking what I take normally - a daily anti-histamine - and the two medicines from the doctor and that's it. She says fine.

So I take another anti-coughing decongestant and my anti-histamine (next antibiotic is in the morning). Of course, neither one works right away, so when a few minutes later, I start coughing? My mother tries to push the cough syrup at me, and look there are all these vitamins that I spent ages telling her I didn't want to take and hey just try this one other pill that I don't even know what it is anymore, it'll make you feel better, promise-

...That's rally fucking bad. As in, I worry about you bad. If she persists I would tell my doctor to see if maybe since she won't listen to you, she'll listen to your doctor instead.

...I don't mean to sound insensitive, but the reason you puked was probably the antibiotic, not the vitamins. Unless you've been taking massive doses of vit D, there's basically no reason for interactions between most over the counter vitamins and prescription medications.

Next time try taking your antibiotic with food, and really? You should be glad you have a mother that is at least trying to take care of you.

If the antibiotic you're taking is a sulfa drug, this reaction means you intolerant of the drug. GO SEE THE DOCTOR especially if it persists. They will find another class of antibiotic for you.

That sucks, especially when you're sick and don't have the ability to just leave. Maybe if you cut her off and keep stressing that you've already had this discussion and she needs to stop because she's making you feel worse? And that if she wants to help you, a bowl of hot chicken soup would be nice?

I made brownies for the Christmas gathering with my boyfriend's family. Hardly anyone touched them. Which isn't really a big deal in and of itself. But then I turned around and my boyfriend's idiot brother-in-law was squatting on the counter, using my brownies as a prop in his (g-rated) reenactment of that "Cake Farts" video, with everyone else gathered around him, laughing and whooping.

I'm never baking anything for those fucks again. :/

I hate New Years. I don't even want to go out - I've had no real good experiences, and some real bad ones, on previous New Year's Eves, and I have no real expectations of enjoying myself when I go out. But I feel like I have to. Partly because I don't have my own space to myself right now so I can't just stay in on my own - it forces me to come up with a plan - but there's also just the massive expectation of "New Years Eve, you just go out and do something." And I really don't want to.

Maybe try going to a public event with a book, laptop, phone, etc. - you are "out", but then can find a quiet corner and just do your own thing. (I do this all the time - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.)

Hope you get through the New Year okay, anon. :)

My aunt (who cost my parents six figures in a failed business venture, and has been living with them for over a year) is sabotaging my cousins futures - encouraging her to act like she has parents who are upper middleclass, not literally bankrupt. Telling her to give up the first proper job she's had after nearly two years unemployment, because if you're not pursuing your dreams you're happy being stuck in a dead end job. Called my job and future career goals fascist. Told my parents they'd wasted their lives in meaningless jobs (they're both highly successful professionals) . Complained about my parents hospitality, despite them putting up both her and her very large number of equines at great expense, even after they’ve destroyed our fields. Called my siblings spoiled, ignoring her daughters rich history of never having been told no. And generally launched barbs at every opportunity. There’s no seeming outcome to change these circumstances.

Christmas had an edge to say the least.

Thankfully I was spared the rants about gay propaganda from my brother and his girlfriend this time but instead they would talk about nothing but their weight loss goals and especially their diet. I got to hear about how you get more nutrients from spinach if you put it in a smoothie than if you eat it raw and about how microwave produces radiation that makes eating the food you cook in it dangerous and of course everything they eat needs to have "organic" stamped on it or it's poison.

I also found out that my brother now has a second job and his girlfriend still does nothing all day but I couldn't say anything because I do the same thing and I would feel like a hypocrite if I said something about it (I'm waiting to see if I got accepted to a new school on a part-time basis because after going on and off medical leave several times I've finally accepted that the full-time thing just isn't going to work with my health problems).

Oh god, not the Microwave People. That's one of the dumbest nutbar beliefs out there.

The spinach thing seems like a misinterpretation of a real thing, but it's a real thing with pharmaceuticals and not food. Liquid medications are broken down, and thus act, faster, which is preferable for some things. But you're not looking for an immediate effect from spinach, so it doesn't really matter. Your body will get to the vitamins soon enough.

Need an answer for the microwave/EMF/tinfoil hatters in your life? Behold, the difference between non-ionizing (microwave, cell towers) radiation and ionizing radiation (nuclear bombs, X-rays):

http://www.epa.gov/radiation/understand/index.html

The thing I always found hilarious about the anti-microwave people was how happy they tend to be to stick themselves inside a freaking MRI (like waaaaaaaaaaay more ionizing radiation than a regular X-ray though those aren't the best thing to be repeatedly exposed to either), in order to justify whatever hypochondriac nonsense they've dreamed up that they have.

Ugh, the microwave thing. My boyfriend's folks use the microwave that came with their kitchen as a spice cabinet because they're afraid to use it to heat food. It boggles the mind.

I already got my ranting out, to various people, so let's just say I am extra-motivated to get a job and a place far, far away from certain people, and never worry about them and their bullshit again. Feels good.

I got sick right after Christmas and have been stuck in the house watching hours of TV like a lump.
Not really holiday-related, but...I wanted to spend my time doing things and eating too much crappy food and playing in the snow, not sneezing every five seconds and feeling miserable, dangit!

Two of my friends fought over Facebook over the most trivial reason and it's made inviting friends to my New Year's Eve party awkward because I can't invite both. It's got to be one or none. I invited the most offended friend but only because I'm pretty sure other friends already has plans.

But the whole situation is kinda annoying and I'm going to have to tell the friend I invited to knock it off. Blah it's just frustrating. I don't expect all my friends to get along but try to be mature guys.

My father took my sister on vacation to a tropical island for Christmas. He gave me a sandbox.

I know him well enough to be fairly certain that it wasn't a deliberate snub, but damn if it wasn't utterly tactless.

I asked my family for a diary and some books from home and offered to pay postage because I'm in America. They sent gift cards (in US $) and said to buy them that way because it would cost less. I wanted everything from home! I can handle the books with American spellings if I have to but I need a diary from home so I know the right holidays. And since the gift cards are in US $, they aren't enough to buy a diary from home and have dispatched here. And the diary I most wanted can't be sent here because Bright Side products aren't licensed for sale outside the UK );

My gramma's son got arrested again while out with a friend, leaving her with his two little dogs. Now she can't go see her dying sister unless someone steps up and takes care of the little things. If I wasn't poor in a different country I would have been there yesterday, and neither of her other sons WHO LIVE IN THE SAME CITY are doing anything for her.

At least he wasn't using her car... I guess...
