Eh, I keep seeing those secret!Fëanorian!Tauriel and I'm just not convinced. Sure, Tolkien said red hair was 'rare' among Elves but he didn't say vanishingly rare and he certainly didn't say that OMG! only! Mahtan's! descendants! ever! had! red! hair!

I'm fine with Tauriel herself but eh, not everything has to be connected to those über-fan-favourites the sons of Fëanor (not a huge fan of the 'the Arkenstone is actually a Silmaril' fanon either). Meh.

Really? Has someone besides me been doing it?

The Arkenstone's not a Silmaril, though. That would have been noticed.

Yeah. I can't remember reading any fics (but then I'm not really in the Hobbit fandom) but I've definitely seen people at least pointing out the possible connection.

And agreed re: the Arkenstone.

I think it was suggested in 'The History of the Hobbit' - which is a scholarly work of the order of Christopher Tolkien's own work. There are lots of parallels between Rhovanion and Beleriand, for instance - eg cave-dwelling wood-elves. Must go and re-read that...

i'm not a fan of fëanorian tauriel either, but given that it's specifically mentioned to be rare and tolkien spends so much time talking about elf hair in general but only ever mentions 5 members of one family with red hair in particular...idk i am kind of just a little aggrieved that tauriel has red hair. like would it have been that hard to just give her dark hair, if they wanted a visual contrast between her and legolas and thranduil?

but i would rather take no explanation and live w/ the minor annoyance (i like her overall tbh) than have her be a descendant of fëanor. pls no.

He writes a lot about royal families, though, and we don't know that much about more 'lowly' Elves in general, or the few who are mentioned are rarely described. I'd never really thought about it in depth before, but I'd imagine that while there may only be one notable family with red-haired people in it, red hair among Elves could be as it is among actual humans in Western Europe - rarer than any other hair colour but still not something especially exceptional.

IMO, if Tauriel was dark-haired even more people would be confusing her with Arwen.
