Pretty sure your idea is better than whatever crap the writer's will spew at us.

Or henna grows in Middle Earth...

yay to henna!

that stuff is fantastic in your hair

although I hate to think how much is needed for knee-length hair, I've just got hip-length and it's a pain in the bupkis.

Secret 2 - The Hobbit (movies), The Silmarillion (book)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-31 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Tauriel, as portrayed by Evangeline Lilly, from the movie "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug". She is an elf with pale skin, long orange hair, pointy ears and wearing a green tunic.]

I have the bestest headcanon for her, and nothing the movies eventually deliver will ever live up to it.

Do you know how rare red hair is in Tolkien elves? It's really, vanishingly rare. So maybe Amrod had a Moriquendi wife who left him after the Second Kinslaying. The baby she never told him about grew up to be one of Tauriel's parents before getting killed -- Mirkwood's a dangerous place.

Tauriel doesn't know, but Thranduil suspects. She's three-quarters silvan and one of his people -- but he also doesn't want his son marrying a descendant of the Kinslayers.

And Noldor has always gotten along better with dwarves.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
And so this is how I learn that I cannot take anyone seriously when they use the word "bestest." Huh.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's meant to indicate I'm not taking myself too seriously, so that's okay.

Cool. I approve.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I love this idea.

But I'm sure whatever Philippa came up with is fine too.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
YES YES YES YES YES.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
ILU, anon. Your headcanon is so wonderful that it pretty much redeems the entire damned movie series.

I like this head-canon.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I keep seeing those secret!Fëanorian!Tauriel and I'm just not convinced. Sure, Tolkien said red hair was 'rare' among Elves but he didn't say vanishingly rare and he certainly didn't say that OMG! only! Mahtan's! descendants! ever! had! red! hair!

I'm fine with Tauriel herself but eh, not everything has to be connected to those über-fan-favourites the sons of Fëanor (not a huge fan of the 'the Arkenstone is actually a Silmaril' fanon either). Meh.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Really? Has someone besides me been doing it?

The Arkenstone's not a Silmaril, though. That would have been noticed.

i'm not a fan of fëanorian tauriel either, but given that it's specifically mentioned to be rare and tolkien spends so much time talking about elf hair in general but only ever mentions 5 members of one family with red hair in particular...idk i am kind of just a little aggrieved that tauriel has red hair. like would it have been that hard to just give her dark hair, if they wanted a visual contrast between her and legolas and thranduil?

but i would rather take no explanation and live w/ the minor annoyance (i like her overall tbh) than have her be a descendant of fëanor. pls no.

Nah, but I related this headcanon sometime last week in a thread on overcomplicated headcanons.

It's not a repeat, however there was a thread in the general comments about overly complicated headcanons, and someone posted this, with the caveat that they had also written a secret to the same effect, and it would be posted soon.

Tauriel <3

Yeah, one more movie is not enough to really flesh out her character. Thankfully fandom is very creative and I love reading headcanons about her.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
It's awesome and actually an idea that has occurred to me too. At least the "Amrod had a Moriquendi wife" part.

My other headcanon for Tauriel has her being descended from the part of the Tatyar clan that never left Middle Earth for Aman.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
descended from the part of the Tatyar clan that never left Middle Earth for Aman

I thought that covered most of the elves of Mirkwood? Not Thranduil's family, but the rest? I really need to reread the histories...

I saw this when you posted it in the general comments thread.

I like it. I like red hair being vanishingly rare as a hair colour.

I wonder if people know about this partly because I told a few people, some of whom are on Twitter.

One of the people I did tell is a fan of Maedhros and her fic (my favourite fic) he's alive in the Third Age. We debated if it would be possible for him to run into Tauriel at some point.

*chokes* Oh god, no.
She's a Mary Sue and no amount of headcanon can save this trainwreck of a character.

Sorry not sorry.

I only really like the secret!Feanorian!Tauriel theory when it's combined with the Arkensilmaril theory. The end result is the north imploding - another brutal battle between elves and dwarves and then a fourth kinslaying would be committed by Tauriel.

That said, Gandalf could just say "it's a Silmaril - made by the Elves" and Thorin would chuck that stone down the mountain whilst Thranduil backed away faster than when confronted with a dragon.
