It probably came from the same place as "Armin is weak and useless (despite having saved people's lives multiple times now)." SnK fandom is not good at the whole acknowledging-vital-character-development thing sometimes.

Yes. Eren and Mikasa went into the Army at 12 too.

I believe they were 10 when the Wall broke. They spent 2 years in a refugee camp. Then at 12 they joined the army and spent 3 years training. Then at 15 they graduate and Trost happens making it "five years since 'that day'"

The SNK timeline can get confusing.

Because Jean was pretty antagonistic towards Eren during their trainee days, and even currently as of chapter 51.

He's not a douchbag but he's blunt and honest so it comes off as rude sometimes.

Oh I've ranted about this before anon; the SNK fandom cannot understand anything subtle or nuanced and instead acts like four-year-olds with shiny objects.

Does Jean have MOMENTS of being a moronic douchebag? Of course he fucking does, he's fifteen. But all they are is MOMENTS and the rest of the time he's also brave and talented and cunning. HE SAVED MIKASA GODDAMN IT.

Yeah, the same guy who was upset that the attack on Trost happened before he could get safely behind the walls and that he would actually have to use his titan-killing talents ... ended up leading a squad of survivors to safety and probably saved all of their goddamn lives.

Goddamn it, there's a fucking REASON why Marco applauds Jean's leadership skills and says that he's the only reason he's still alive ... BECAUSE IT'S TRUE.

Exactly!! He saved Mikasa, and afterwards didn't expect to get any credit for it. And even though he has feelings for Mikasa, he supports Eren instead of being jealous of him, and doesn't expect Mikasa to like him back. And he's usually the one holding it together and comforting others in situations where everyone is upset.
But no, fandom still loves depicting him as an immature idiot. Character development, what is that?

Well, In chapter 52 he was jealous of Eren because he thought he was watching Mikasa while she was exercising. But it's true that Jean became a good support for Eren because he doesn't sugar coat anything around him and is not afraid to tell Eren that lots of people died because of him so he has to pick up his slack, and that motivated Eren.
