is it really news that a dumb redneck is saying stupid shit?
starphotographs: I like him. He kind of looks and acts like one of my characters. (I did not know this when I started liking him!) (Victor (...>:|))

Nope. Who the hell cares? It's just some dumb hillbilly saying things a dumb hillbilly would say.

Re: Duck Dynasty and underage girls

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
It's because what he's saying is so very wrong, and he's being rewarded for it. Racism, homophobia, and now statutory rape.

Re: Duck Dynasty and underage girls

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, statutory rape laws aren't the same in every state, and in many a 15/18 relationship wouldn't be classified as that. So yeah, he's an asshole, but maybe back the rape train up?

It's a murky little area-- with a small age gap, the couple are of the same generation (so no/less creepy power differential), but one holds legal rights and independence that are generally withheld from minors. I had my friends go through exactly that, where she got together with her older sibling's friend/classmate. They got married last year at 25 and 29 and nobody bats an eye, but it was kinda awkward to explain at 16 and 20.

Sadly, he's got a master's degree so he's not exactly dumb. He *is* however, an asshole with massive media coverage and fans who attack anyone who disagrees with the homophobic, racist and generally wrong shit he says.

Dude has a master's in education. He may be a redneck with vile views, but that doesn't make him dumb (unless you're referring to being dumb enough to put his offensive beliefs out into the world).

Yeah, my mom has a master's in education too. She's also very, very tinfoil hat.

Religion makes people dumber.

Re: Duck Dynasty and underage girls

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, not really. It just effects certain people that way.

[personal profile] dethtoll 2014-01-01 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Well, no argument there. It's just that "certain people" is to me a much larger percentage.

I can't quite agree there - but I've also been on the otherside of the fence and met a lot atheist who've spewed the crap the Duck Dynasty guy does [or, in particularly *lovely* memory, kicked someone out for being homosexual].

Stupid is as stupid does, regardless of religion [or the lack thereof.]

Yeah, but I never said atheism made anyone any smarter, either. My point was that religion, due to an established dogma built on historical inequalities that have only compounded one another over the years with different variations per region (such as the concept of marrying young girls) and the maintenance thereof, operating on the human psychological pattern of adhering to religious tenets on a doctrinal basis because that's what they're comfortable with. (Cognitive dissonance is avoided at all costs due to a sort of psychological pain response -- if you touch your hand to a hot pan you'll recoil, and so do many religious people with cognitive dissonance.)

"Can".

"can" make people dumber.

Okay.

Re: Duck Dynasty and underage girls

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, otherwise you're saying - without exception - everyone who believes in a religion has gotten dumber for it...Even, you know. The people who don't force it on anyone, don't use it to justify their hate or as a reason to take someone else's rights away.

Which ignores a lot of people who don't do those things.

I've also known some really daft/tinhatty people with master's degrees or higher.

Dumb people crop up everywhere, I think. Sometimes, they crop up in grad school.

Re: Duck Dynasty and underage girls

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I wouldn't say religion is the cause though. I'm pretty sure it doesn't say, "Hark, and all women be gold diggers when they reach their twentieth year. And so God spoketh to them and said, "Bitches be trippin', marry those girls when they're ripe for tha' pickin" in the bible. /I'm an Atheist, so, no dog in this fight.

No, but religion is a major tool of historical institutional inequality and views like that often have a basis (or an excuse) in religion.

Re: Duck Dynasty and underage girls

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
It might not, but it's not wholly unconnected with Duck Dynasty guy's mindset about social issues in general, either. Plenty of Christian sects use the Bible as justification for why women should be subservient to men. It's not a coincidence that Christian fundamentalism and feminism tends not to go hand in hand.

Ya know, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he either didn't really believe half the stuff he said, or at the very least was only exaggerating his beliefs or how normal/proper he seems to think it is.

Because seriously, reality TV = there really IS no bad publicity. I mean, it still sucks that he's saying these things, getting rewarded for them, and adding this sentiments to the general consciousness. But at the same time, I can't help but wonder if he really is this vile or if he's just playing it up for the money.

Re: Duck Dynasty and underage girls

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
It's nice of you to try and give him the benefit of the doubt. What undermines that argument though is the fact that

1) He doesn't just talk the talk, he walks the walk. Meeting your future wife when she's 14 and getting married two years later is exactly what he recommends re: underage girls making the best wives. I don't think it's just lip service.

2) That it's been reported that A&E has actually edited out the more extreme comments he's made, something he acknowledges himself. If they truly felt there was no such thing as bad publicity, there'd be no need to censor him at all... which is what they've been doing for a while.

Had not known that. Also makes me sadder - as terrible as him saying that stuff is, I still feel like it would have been marginally better if it really had been just lip-service and not his actual beliefs. Thanks for letting me know. :)
