It's kind of like getting into a relationship with someone with a kid -- you shouldn't expect the kid to go away to make things more convenient for you.

Was Walter totally dependent on his brother though? Or were the two brothers so used to being codependent that they didn't even stop to think that maybe Walter could find his own place in the world? I mean, there are other muppets around, so it's not like the world doesn't know what they are at all, and we see that happen at the end, when Walter joins The Muppets, Gary isn't needed. (And yes, I know that it happens because the Muppets get back together, but I don't buy it that there was no other place for Walter prior to the Muppets getting back together.)
I feel like a better analogy would be starting to date someone with a teenage kid; at first, you understand why they need to stick around, but as time goes on, you're just left wondering: they're an adult now, why are they still coming with us on vacations, why can't they be left home alone for a couple of days? Why do they have to go everywhere with us, why can't we have some alone time? You know?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 12:50 am (UTC)(link)Disclosure time -- I have a sibling with some persistent mental/emotional issues, who effectively can't live on their own. Right now they live with our parents, but eventually... Dependence doesn't always go away. The push-pull of I want my own life/they need me and I love them felt... really un-comedic.

So, yeah, I can see it as being something that was good for him when he was young, but as he got older, the Muppets in the Muppet show were not the only way that muppets were successful.
Completely understandable, and I can see why you didn't think it was funny. I just don't think that what you've described, and the movie, are completely comparable situations, you know? If that had been the situation in the movie, I would be able to sympathize with the secret maker more, but I don't think it was.

I'm in a similar situation with a sibling (make that two, actually), and I completely agree. As funny as the movie was at times, the Walter-Gary dynamic in particular hit way too close to home for me to find it as funny as other people did, since I live the role of Gary day in/out. ._.;;
