Then, when she goes along with it, her boyfriend forgets their anniversary dinner, the one thing she asked for them to do on the trip.
Honestly, I felt kind of bad for Mary during the movie. At least by the end Gary realized that Walter didn't need him, and he stopped being so weirdly clingy/codependent. Like, I get that their brothers, but that just weirded me out.
(Also, I'm pretty sure she only calls him "friend" because "brother" didn't fit the scan of the song she was singing, and they needed something that sort of rhymed with "grand".)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 12:31 am (UTC)(link)On the other hand, Mary knew Walter was there, and she knew Walter was totally dependent on his brother. It's kind of like getting into a relationship with someone with a kid -- you shouldn't expect the kid to go away to make things more convenient for you.

Was Walter totally dependent on his brother though? Or were the two brothers so used to being codependent that they didn't even stop to think that maybe Walter could find his own place in the world? I mean, there are other muppets around, so it's not like the world doesn't know what they are at all, and we see that happen at the end, when Walter joins The Muppets, Gary isn't needed. (And yes, I know that it happens because the Muppets get back together, but I don't buy it that there was no other place for Walter prior to the Muppets getting back together.)
I feel like a better analogy would be starting to date someone with a teenage kid; at first, you understand why they need to stick around, but as time goes on, you're just left wondering: they're an adult now, why are they still coming with us on vacations, why can't they be left home alone for a couple of days? Why do they have to go everywhere with us, why can't we have some alone time? You know?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 12:50 am (UTC)(link)Disclosure time -- I have a sibling with some persistent mental/emotional issues, who effectively can't live on their own. Right now they live with our parents, but eventually... Dependence doesn't always go away. The push-pull of I want my own life/they need me and I love them felt... really un-comedic.

So, yeah, I can see it as being something that was good for him when he was young, but as he got older, the Muppets in the Muppet show were not the only way that muppets were successful.
Completely understandable, and I can see why you didn't think it was funny. I just don't think that what you've described, and the movie, are completely comparable situations, you know? If that had been the situation in the movie, I would be able to sympathize with the secret maker more, but I don't think it was.
Sending you all the best wishes.

I'm in a similar situation with a sibling (make that two, actually), and I completely agree. As funny as the movie was at times, the Walter-Gary dynamic in particular hit way too close to home for me to find it as funny as other people did, since I live the role of Gary day in/out. ._.;;

You know who WAS selfish over the whole thing? Miss Piggy. She initially refused to help just because Kermit didn't frame it as part of their romantic relationship (not because of the life she'd built, to respond to an older secret, but because Kermit asked her to help the group, not him), then when she does help (I wasn't clear why), she spends the whole time being passive-aggressive at him, until he relents and rekindles their relationship. Christ, Piggy, do it or don't, but if you're gonna, don't be a jackass about it.

It didn't work out the way she wanted it to.

...Yeah I have to agree. I mean, it was kind of in character for her, (at least, I feel like it was a little), but t was super annoying, to me. Especially when you look at the Word of God reasoning for why Kermit was so freaked out in the first place. (Apparently in "Muppets Take Manhatten", Piggy tricked Kermit into really marrying her by getting a real priest to reside over their theatrical marriage, IDK, but that's just kind of skeevy to me.)
(I think she helps because she wants to help the other muppets; even when she's mad at Kermit, she's not at the others.)
which is my tl;dr way of saying that yeah, I agree with you.

Yeah. I mean, she didn't handle it the best when he said 'ok, go sight see, I'll catch up' - tell him that, and why, you're ticked off, don't go through a thesaurus listing synonyms for alone (although that was funny)! - but the actual reason she was upset was perfectly reasonable, I thought.
Yeah, that's been the gag for a while, and it makes me like Piggy a bit less - especially since she apparently considers it binding even after Kermit objected.

Yep. I just. Miss Piggy, I want to like you, I really do, but that plot just gets to me. :/
no subject
Yeah, I agree with this, I think.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 05:17 am (UTC)(link)Honestly, Mary was the least annoying part of that movie, imo.
