[The Muppet Movie]

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I had to make an effort not to think too hard about that movie.

...

I seem to have done such a good job of not thinking about it that I currently can't remember a lot of the specifics of what bothered me, but I know both the humans and Walter drove me nuts, and I didn't feel like what they set up with Walter could have any satisfactory conclusion.

Secret 3 - The Muppets (2011 film)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2014-01-01 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Mary, as portrayed by Amy Adams, from the 2011 movie "The Muppets". There are some colorful muppets/puppets around her while she looks sort of paralyzed with anger and/or disbelief.]

I think she was selfish. Saving the studio was something very important, and all she cared about was them spending time with her. Plus, I found it awful how she described Walter as Gary's friend instead of his brother, it just seemed so disrespectful, and it seemed like she was just mean to him the whole time.

Secret because no one should care that much about what went on the Muppets Movie.

I don't think she was too selfish; her boyfriend of ten years invites her on this super romantic trip, only to then invite his brother to go along with them. She says that she doesn't mind the brother tagging along as long as they can spend their anniversary dinner together. They spend the first day going to Muppet Studios, which is what the brother wanted to do, and their romantic trip gets derailed because the brother wants to save it- something that not even Kermit wants to at first.

Then, when she goes along with it, her boyfriend forgets their anniversary dinner, the one thing she asked for them to do on the trip.

Honestly, I felt kind of bad for Mary during the movie. At least by the end Gary realized that Walter didn't need him, and he stopped being so weirdly clingy/codependent. Like, I get that their brothers, but that just weirded me out.

(Also, I'm pretty sure she only calls him "friend" because "brother" didn't fit the scan of the song she was singing, and they needed something that sort of rhymed with "grand".)

Gary shouldn't have made commitments and not met them -- not the trip alone, and definitely not the dinner.

On the other hand, Mary knew Walter was there, and she knew Walter was totally dependent on his brother. It's kind of like getting into a relationship with someone with a kid -- you shouldn't expect the kid to go away to make things more convenient for you.

[personal profile] loracarol 2014-01-01 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

Was Walter totally dependent on his brother though? Or were the two brothers so used to being codependent that they didn't even stop to think that maybe Walter could find his own place in the world? I mean, there are other muppets around, so it's not like the world doesn't know what they are at all, and we see that happen at the end, when Walter joins The Muppets, Gary isn't needed. (And yes, I know that it happens because the Muppets get back together, but I don't buy it that there was no other place for Walter prior to the Muppets getting back together.)

I feel like a better analogy would be starting to date someone with a teenage kid; at first, you understand why they need to stick around, but as time goes on, you're just left wondering: they're an adult now, why are they still coming with us on vacations, why can't they be left home alone for a couple of days? Why do they have to go everywhere with us, why can't we have some alone time? You know?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I don't remember the movie as well as I could, but I think Walter reacted to the Muppets as the first time he'd seen people like him being successful?

Disclosure time -- I have a sibling with some persistent mental/emotional issues, who effectively can't live on their own. Right now they live with our parents, but eventually... Dependence doesn't always go away. The push-pull of I want my own life/they need me and I love them felt... really un-comedic.

[personal profile] loracarol 2014-01-01 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I think that may have been the case when he was really young, and he was first watching the Muppet show, but even after they disbanded, they were really all successful in their own ways: Gonzo had a successful factory, Miss Piggy ran a fashion magazine, Sam the Eagle was a on a news show (a parody of Fox, but whatever your beliefs about how good that show is, it is successful), Beaker and Bunson were working on the Large Hadron collider, etc.

So, yeah, I can see it as being something that was good for him when he was young, but as he got older, the Muppets in the Muppet show were not the only way that muppets were successful.

Completely understandable, and I can see why you didn't think it was funny. I just don't think that what you've described, and the movie, are completely comparable situations, you know? If that had been the situation in the movie, I would be able to sympathize with the secret maker more, but I don't think it was.

Sending you all the best wishes.

RE: that last sentence...

I'm in a similar situation with a sibling (make that two, actually), and I completely agree. As funny as the movie was at times, the Walter-Gary dynamic in particular hit way too close to home for me to find it as funny as other people did, since I live the role of Gary day in/out. ._.;;

Agreed with most of this. (Although she seems happy enough to save the studio before that began to interfere with the extant promise.)

You know who WAS selfish over the whole thing? Miss Piggy. She initially refused to help just because Kermit didn't frame it as part of their romantic relationship (not because of the life she'd built, to respond to an older secret, but because Kermit asked her to help the group, not him), then when she does help (I wasn't clear why), she spends the whole time being passive-aggressive at him, until he relents and rekindles their relationship. Christ, Piggy, do it or don't, but if you're gonna, don't be a jackass about it.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
She should have just come along immediately and feigned interest in someone else. He's have gotten jealous immediately.

She did; Pepe the Prawn.

It didn't work out the way she wanted it to.

Yeah, but at least that's in character for Miss Piggy! She's an egomaniac and a *fabulous* egomaniac at that!

Oh yeah, she was totally willing to help! She just wanted to do a little bit of sightseeing too, and have that one dinner, and honestly? I don't really blame her, especially since her deal wasn't "I only want to sight see instead of saving the studio" but was rather "can't we do a little of sight seeing and have dinner together on our anniversary and I'll help with the studio?"

...Yeah I have to agree. I mean, it was kind of in character for her, (at least, I feel like it was a little), but t was super annoying, to me. Especially when you look at the Word of God reasoning for why Kermit was so freaked out in the first place. (Apparently in "Muppets Take Manhatten", Piggy tricked Kermit into really marrying her by getting a real priest to reside over their theatrical marriage, IDK, but that's just kind of skeevy to me.)

(I think she helps because she wants to help the other muppets; even when she's mad at Kermit, she's not at the others.)

which is my tl;dr way of saying that yeah, I agree with you.

Yeah. I mean, she didn't handle it the best when he said 'ok, go sight see, I'll catch up' - tell him that, and why, you're ticked off, don't go through a thesaurus listing synonyms for alone (although that was funny)! - but the actual reason she was upset was perfectly reasonable, I thought.

Yeah, that's been the gag for a while, and it makes me like Piggy a bit less - especially since she apparently considers it binding even after Kermit objected.

Oh, yeah, as funny as I thought it was, I feel like she could have handled it better. (Admittedly, I paradoxically thought that the way she handled it badly made her more "human", but that could just be me. :3)

Yep. I just. Miss Piggy, I want to like you, I really do, but that plot just gets to me. :/

Yeah, I agree with this, I think.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much agreed.

Honestly, Mary was the least annoying part of that movie, imo.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-01-01 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
After watching the movie twice, I don't blame her for feeling the way she did. But imho, the movie... didn't really handle her character well at all, now that I think of it. If anything, I got the feeling that Mary was only added so there could be some kind of conflict between Gary and Walter. She didn't really get much character development, outside of coming off as a "soft" antagonist (for lack of a better term) for the brothers. idek. =/

[personal profile] loracarol 2014-01-01 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well, she did come through and help save (part of) the day with her electrician skills, but yeah, other than that, I agree with you.

Yeah, she wasn't given a lot of characterization.

I think, though, to be fair, of the four major characters original to the movie (her, Gary, Walter, and Mr Richman), only Walter is given any serious characterization.

Richman's the insanely cartoony bad guy.
Gary is Walter's protective-and-thus-overly-attached brother.
Mary is Gary's long-suffering girlfriend.

(... I can't believe I only just now noticed that Gary and Mary rhyme. *facepalm*)

Gary gets a little bit of growth, but it's only to demonstrate Walter's.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
Preeeetty sure she calls him a "friend" because it needed to rhyme with "end," Anon. It was in a song.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I was so confused for a moment because this was labeled "The Muppet Movie" (the title of THE original from 1979) and not "The Muppets". Distinctions like that are important, yo.
