But then-!

Adrelle was trembling. She knew she was forbidden from setting foot in the glen, but she couldn't ignore the call any longer. With each step she could feel the weight and freedom of her actions swirl all around her. Her heart had never beat so quickly in all her short life. As she approached the walker's glen, she could see them. The ring of stones that called forth the new ones, and bestowed upon them the ancient's power.

It was against tribal law for women to set foot here, and no woman had ever broken it; until now. The Walkers had been dying for decades. Fewer and fewer had been called, and fewer still had been gifted. The Walkers were a dying breed, and no one had any answers as to why. It had never occurred to the old ones that they had been the makers of their own demise.

Ardelle slowly walked to the center of the ring, and as she did the ancient stones began to stir. From within them lights emerged, flickers and wisps of all different colors. A soft tinkling sound followed, and to Ardelle's ears they sounded like bells. The lights danced around her, leaving rainbow colored tails as they passed. To a casual observer, this may have seemed frightening, but not for Ardelle. She could feel a strange force start to pulse outward from her heart. Every hair on her body stood on end and her fingers began to tingle. For the first time Ardelle finally felt the one thing rarely rewarded to her kind. Freedom.

As quickly as the lights had come, they vanished. Ardelle fell to her knees and within the now silent ring of stones, she began to weep. How many women from her tribe had been called and never dared answer? How many had spent their lives fighting to remain silent, when every instinct told them to cry out. No, thought Ardelle, never again. She wiped the tears from her speckled cheeks and stood. No mere maid any longer, here stood a Walker; and this walker was a woman.

She would be the first, but Ardelle vowed she would not be the last.
