All Tolkien elves are beautiful and any adaptations showing otherwise are wrong.

Sorry.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Why'd they hire Evangeline Lilly then?

Yeah, that's like. Book-canon and hammered on for paragraphs upon paragraphs of description. O.o

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, elves are SUPPOSED to be beautiful and ethereal :/

Wait..you understand that Rankin Bass went against the description in the books with something they thought would be more visually interesting for kids right? And that if anything Rankin Bass uglifed him?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
So we can keep with the trope that ugly=bad, beautiful=good? /yawn

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
But Thranduil isn't particularly evil? Not that he's necessarily the kindest of chaps either, but still...

Headcanon: Thranduil prettied himself up.

Maybe it's Maybelline.

Not just headcanon, if you accept the movie as sort-of canon.

Thranduil's blemish cream is wicked effective.

Elven glamour.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yikes, then there would be absolutely nothing redeemable about The Hobbit movies.

Secret 8 - The Hobbit (animated film vs live action film), Thranduil (character)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2014-01-03 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is two versions of the Elvenking Thranduil side by side: The first is from the 1977 animated Rankin/Bass film "The Hobbit", and the other is from the 2013 live action Peter Jackson film "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug", where he is played by Lee Pace. In the first one he is a short, wrinkly green creature with a bald head and long blond sideburns, and is wearing green clothing and a crown of berries and leaves? And in the other he is a much more attractive and human-looking elf with light skin, long blond hair and a more badass crown thing that looks like it's made of metallic leaves. He is also wearing green clothing. They both look like they have green eyes, although Lee Pace's look kind of blueish.]

I wish they hadn't prettied Thranduil up.

I'm not sure he's even supposed to be "pretty". I think he's just supposed to look eerie and otherworldly.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think he's all that pretty. Prettier than in the animated version, sure, but PJ's (male) Elves are all fairly meh to me. I guess LotR!Legolas and Lindir are alright, but the rest...

Rankin-Bass' depiction always bothered me because of the huge difference in appearance between the sylvan elves and the Rivendell elves.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah i always wondered why they all looked like a slightly better looking gollums

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
As everybody else already said, Thranduil is pretty, in the books. It's that cartoon that didn't follow canon.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
Clearly someone did not read the book and feels it's necessary to tell others how they think it should be. Yawn.
