PS3 and TV Help?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone who's a dedicated gamer or any sort of tech enthusiast is probably going to wince at this post, but here goes:

I just bought a used PS3 because there is a game I've wanted to play so badly and I finally decided to go for it.

I've never had a new tv, the one I have I got second hand and is 20+ years old; I have an adapter for my dvd player because things hook up to tvs with those yellow, white and red plugs instead of with that screw with the little wire in the middle my tv has, but that doesn't have anything to plug the HDMI cord the PS3 came with to.

So! I've decided to buy a new tv, I'll be going to look tomorrow, but I thought I'd ask here in-case anyone has any advice. I'm wondering if any HD tv has a way to connect with HDMI cords or if I need to specifically look for one that has it.

They're should be HDMI cable sockets in most HD tv's, so you should be fine.

Ok, awesome. Thank you! :)

These days any tv you buy new will have HDNI ports.

I don't have anything to contribute, but thanks for the warning that I'll need to buy a new TV if I pick up a second-hand PS3. That's not the sort of thing I'd want to find out after the fact (...like you did. Sorry.)

I'm glad my question could help someone else (and that I'm not the only one who didn't know that). Yeah, it was disappointing that I couldn't play it when it arrived, the game got here two days before and I've been itching to play it since. I hope things go better for you if you get a PS3.

Technically, they CAN connect with composite cables, but it looks like ass. I had to buy a flatscreen with HDMI just so I could see wtf I was doing with Red Dead Redemption.

You don't have to buy a new tv if you pick up a second-hand (or new) PS3.

I have an old tv too (tube tv) and I connect the PS3 with the cinch/RCA cable (the "red-white-yellow" cable) that was also included (because not everyone has a flat screen tv and therewith HDMI ports - Sony isn't totally stupid).

If your tv doesn't have these three ports (some smaller tvs don't have it) you can buy an adapter for the cinch cable - most common is the adapter with scart on the other side. Most (older) tvs have one or more scart ports (HDMI is virtually the "new scart" so the new flat screen tvs have normally no scart ports anymore but therefor HDMI ports).

Those are called composite cables, just FYI.

And as I said before, it looks like ass. Some games just will not be playable on it. I used a CRT for years with my 360 and later my PS3 and I finally gave up and bought a flatscreen and never looked back. Its only real flaw is that PS2 games don't look very good on it sometimes.

I'm a bit late (different time zones) but I'll answer anyway.

I'm from a different country and I tried to find the right English terms for all the cables.

Never had a problem with any game on my old tv...and I don't have the money to buy a flat screen tv. And to be honest I don't plan to buy a new tv when my old one works perfectly fine (for 15 years and still going strong).

Yeah, I have an adapter for the "red-white-yellow" cable, since the PS2 and the GameCube need it.

But a new TV is probably something I'll save up for anyway. If we were to get a PS3, I'd want something that would do FFXIII justice.

Haha, funny you should mention FFXIII.

I was on a 19-inch standard-def TV that had been just fine for my purposes, up until FFXII came out, and my girlfriend and I couldn't read the text on the menus. But I happened to spot a Black Friday deal at the store where I worked at the time, and used my employee discount on top of that, and got I think a 25-inch SDTV for like $150. And FFXII was BEAUTIFUL.

And then FFXIII came out and once again we couldn't read the menus. :P And then one day we were in our favored thrift store, and spotted this GIANT old HDTV. Like we looked up the model number and found out it originally cost $4000 when it was new... which was like ten years ago. But it was big and HD and cost $100, so we got it. And then FFXIII was BEAUTIFUL. (Though I still don't care for the game itself, it's visually pretty.)

At this point I'm sort of afraid of getting another FF game for fear that I'll need yet another larger TV.

That's kind of a tragic story, actually.

I think my current TV (which I've had since about high school, iirc) is a bit bigger than your 19-inch, which is probably why I haven't had trouble with FFXII. But I'll remember to go as big as I can reasonably afford if/when I get a PS3.

Yeah, it's like the developers just ASSUME everyone with a console is going to have a giant HDTV, so they don't need to make anything readable in standard def at moderate sizes. I will admit though, the games look WAY better with an HD connection (whether it's HDMI or whatever else) than in standard, even on the same TV. Since that large HDTV was so old, it predated HDMI and we had to get a special cable for it - but in the meantime, we used the typical old red/white/yellow plugs. Same TV, same size, HUGE difference when we got the right cable.

Pretty much most TVs have HDMI these days. It's no big deal. Just don't buy the cheapest, and be careful about brands. I have a $250 Panasonic I bought 2 years ago and it's prety gud.

What game?

Re: PS3 and TV Help?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the advice, I was actually planning to go for the cheapest one, but thinking about it it'd probably be a better investment to buy a slightly more expensive one that'll last.

Journey. :) I heard about it from a few secrets here a while back and looked it up. After I watched a LP of it I really wished I could play it myself.

If you haven't played Ico/Shadow of the Colossus, get the HD collection! Journey is practically a sequel to them, at least it is now since The Last Guardian is vaporware.

prepare to see your electrical bill go down like woah! (although it does depend on the brand and type of tv, but in general they do consume less electricity than old tvs)

from what I remember from when we upgraded, the "LED" ones consume less than the vanilla LCD and Plasma (like, 30% or so?), BUT, some people report they hurt their eyes, so definitely watch out for that

(I've heard similar things about Plasma, though, so, this is probably a "do your research online on brand and models" and "go try everything in every setting and distance if they let you at the store")
