Finished Mockingjay a couple days ago.

Holy crap was that disappointing. Your thoughts? (PROBABLE SPOILERS IN THREAD)

I think I must be one of the rare few who wasn't disappointed in the ending. I dunno. I read all three books rapid fire in like two days so really it's one giant book in my memory, but other than Prim I don't recall being terribly disappointed by anything. Everyone else seems to rage about how awful it was.

I just don't usually like epilogues in general (wasn't as dissappointing as harry potter's though

I wasn't disappointed either.

I wasn't disappointed either. Not even about Prim, because she annoyed the fuck out of me.

Same here.

I remember reading it, but I have almost no memory of what actually happens. My sister, who has not read the books, asked me for spoilers after we went to see Catching Fire, and all I could say was, "Uh..."

Unmemorable, I guess.

Johanna is hot.

Re: Finished Mockingjay a couple days ago. (and a Fred from Angel comparison?)

You pretty much summed it up. I felt like there were a lot of missed opportunities - we never really get to know the other characters, for instance, so it was hard to care about them that much. On the other hand, it wasn't awful either.

And random, but did Annie remind anyone else of Fred from Angel? I even pictured her as looking like Amy Acker.

I didn't before but I will be picturing her like Fred from now on.

Also, I liked Mockingjay. Not as much as the others but I liked it. People complain about Katniss not having a lot of autonomy and being used but I enjoyed watching her regain her autonomy over the course of the book.

...right up until the very end, where she loses her autonomy again.

It isn't so much her lack of autonomy as the fact that the narrative is so dependent on her perspective that we therefore miss huge chunks of the story.

That and the fact that she WENT AND VOTED FOR A FINAL HUNGER GAMES appears to go almost utterly unaddressed. No introspection from the constantly inward gazing Katniss! Nope! Let's just breeze past that bit!

I agree with most of this. It shouldn't have been stuck in her head. Which is why I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the movie because I've been impressed with how they've been taking advantage of not having to stick with Katniss all the time.

I completely agree with you about how she voted. I've seen theories that she was just trying to placate Coin until she could get rid of her but there's nothing in the book to support that. There's no explanation at all.

Yes, this. I wish it was a ploy until she could take down coin but the thoughts just don't string together in this book. Which would make sense considering her mental state, but it is just not good to read, especially when you compare it to the other books.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
...I thought it was pretty obvious that she voted for the final Hunger Games so she would be put in a position where she'd have the opportunity and the means to kill Coin.

Y'know, I have a vague memory of inferring that as well. I should really re-read. I was going to re-read them as chard was reading them for the first time but I...haven't...done that...

But it isn't obvious. It could have been made obvious. As read, it looks like she voted for the games, and then in the interim (based on thinking about what Snow said) she made a snap decision.

Yeah that all just bugged me so much. I hope that they find a way to fix all that in the movies.

That was about my reaction. Also I was like "Go ahead and kill Katniss, kill Peeta, take everybody, but let Finnick have his happy ending!"

It was my least favourite of the books, especially the epilogue that I felt was rather unneeded (I had liked the last few pages as a nice ending on it's own, so the epilogue just felt like a second epilogue). I honestly hope having it split into two movies will let it be fixed up, smoothed out and significantly less rushed.

The ending to the Divergent trilogy was just as disappointing.

But yeah, I felt really let down at the end of Mockingjay. My least favorite part was just how quickly it ended and I wasn't super happy with the epilogue.

Collins gave us two books of "We need to stand up and fight against oppression" and then rounded off the trilogy with a book about how fighting against oppression just destroys your life and everyone else's and nothing actually changes or gets better. Viva la status quo.

Agreed! It was just so...going out with a whimper and not a bang. And it was SEVERELY hampered by the first person limited pov.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. I was pretty confused about most of it, and it just felt lackluster and like a rushed ending. I liked the first two books a lot better.

I realize now, a long time after I've read it, that the author was trying to describe PTSD, but I'm not sure if there could have been more cues or something cause it went right past me while reading. I remember thinking she was just being an annoying morphine addict, but, yes, I do know that she just went through some bad stuff. I guess I felt like she just crumbled all of a sudden when she'd been so strong for two books. Though, to be fair, I would have been a sobbing mess during the first Games, soooo...

I distinctly remember a spontaneous exclamation of "oh come ON" when Prim died. That was just...drama for drama's sake. Katniss was already a shadow of her former self, was it super necessary to kill off the main reason all this shit happened in the first place?
