Things in fiction that you can't take seriously

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Just as the titles says!

For me, most ridiculous things don't take me out of a story. But I just can't take really young (~8 years or less) characters trying to intentionally kill people seriously unless they're an older character stuck in a younger body.

Really? Because there are actual child killers in real life.

Yeah, but most are above eight years and the ones below that almost always go for children their own age.

Yeah, and how many of them are roaming the streets? Statistically, it's highly unlikely and that should be taken into consideration when writing such a character.

DA. The thing is, it does happen - it doesn't happen OFTEN, but it's not unheard of. And I would think that what should be taken into consideration is what kind of story you're writing.

I haven't seen many "kids trying to kill people stories" in fanfic-land (although maybe this is a trend in some fandom I'm not aware of), but I've certainly seen the topic handled to great creepy effect in horror stories.

"Force field." I have no problem with the concept; call it anything else and I'm all for it. But something about the phrase just sets off my "cheesy crap" alarm.

Making out, for the most part. I find it funny. I'm just weird though.

That's too bad.

Every single story of mine that has been and will ever be contains the line "And then they totally made out."

Then we both win!

And get all the money!!!

But what about Michael Myers?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
And there are some very young real-life kids that have done some horrible things - Dedric Owens(6) (although he wasn't charged since it was argued that he lacked the ability to form intent at that age), Joseph Hall(10), Robert Thompson(10) and Jon Venables(10), Mary Bell(11), Jordan Brown(11).

Yes, that was my thought as well. There was another case in my area a few months ago - someone around 7 or 8 years old who'd very deliberately killed another child. No charges, because he's too young. Of course it gets a lot of publicity, because it IS unusual. I find it horrible, but I don't find it unrealistic to the point that it drags me out of a story (unless it's badly written, in which case that's the writing that's the problem).

Like cloud_riven was saying above, that all the disaster/monster/apocalypse stuff happens in America (or Japan if the story is Japanese), and if it's America it's usually New York City. I can't speak from the Japanese point of view but the American ones strike me as very ethnocentric, like we've had so many movies where we get attacked we sort of expect someone to attack us, because we're just that special or something. Other countries and cultures get attacked, it would be nice if we could explore how they'd react.
