- i genuinely like ron

I adore Ron, and don't understand why he gets so much hate. Yes, he made mistakes, but so does everyone in the series. Hermione's basically a brainy, nerdy Libby for the first few chapters of PS/SS, and she has some pretty scary moments in the last few books as well. Harry has some bad moments himself. And yet Ron gets the flack when Ron actually has some pretty amazing qualities.

To be fair, I'm not sure if Ron hate is still a thing in the fandom - it was several years ago, but fandom's dialed down now... or is it still a thing? I hope not, I never understood that. :(

No it's not. It was a thing over ten years ago, but it hasn't been a thing in a long while. And even back then, it was mainly a thing with Harry/Hermione shippers. Granted, they were very vocal...

that's my reaction, to this day, after wading through the sewers of ron-hate for years in my hp-fandom days

i'll never get it; it's a mystery for the ages

My dislike stems from something purely personal.

I once dated someone like the character (decently athletic, great at strategy, big eater, "emotional range of a teaspoon").

I was in a life-changing accident.

He left so fast, you could see skid-marks.

So.. yeah. Ron gets projected on. Sorry Ron. :(

I don't know what weird fan circles you've been in, but most people who read the books rather than just the movies like Ron.

outright ron-hate (by harmonians & snapewives, mainly) & ron-is-kind-of-a-stupid-jerk-but-meh was par for the course back in the day

I do remember that, but there's a big difference between a character having a hatedom and no one liking the character. Perhaps I didn't phrase my previous comment too clearly ;)

Back in like 2005, I wrote post-war HP fic that killed off Ron but I had reasons. I was among the people who followed that chessboard theory- "7 moves, 7 years"- so at the time, I actually believed that JKR might kill him (although possibly not permanently, as indeed she ended up doing with Harry) in accordance with Ron's sacrifice in the wizard chess game. So yeah I totally gave him a heroic sacrifice. But I am very much not anti-Ron.

Can I ask what fic that was? Curious to see if I read it. Maybe I'll read it now, it'd be interesting. (No pressure to link, I seriously never link my old stuff because... it's my old stuff.)

I never thought Ron would die (I always figured if she killed one of the trio, she'd have to kill all of them off as in a way they were one entity), but I like your reasoning there. And of course thinking a character should die for plot purposes is much different from "Ron sucks no one likes him, so let's kill him off." I'm willing to bet his death was devastating for everyone in the story. :(

I think dying in a heroic sacrifice is one of the best compliments you can give a character. (And I totally hoped for the chessboard thing too!)
If you're comfortable with it, could you rec us this fic? I'd be really interested in reading it.

I didn't dislike Ron, just found him a bit boring. Though he came through in the end. I liked Luna best. :)

Let me one-up you: I ship Harry/Ron.

Oh man. That's like one of those ships that I don't really think about, but I do really like.

Me toooooo! And finding fic for that pairing is so hard.

When I first started reading HP, I came very late to the game, and I expected Ron/Harry to be the juggernaut slash pairing. Imagine my shock to discover Harry/Snape and Harry/Draco (which I love now, but was all headscratchy about to begin with LOL)

Ron is the greatest and was my fave character, unwaveringly, from the moment he was introduced. That's right, I loved him more than Sirius even when Sirius was alive and was the most badass godfather ever.

People who hate Ron hate freedom, can get dirt in their fingernails that they can't get rid of no matter how hard they try, can find out they have a long black hair growing out of their chin after their first date with their crush, can get given a bottle of normal pepsi when they asked for diet coke, etc etc etc.
