I loved the old Lara Croft, and it makes me so fucking angry to hear people go on about how "She was nothing but a sex object for fanboys" before this reboot.

Yes, she did get sexualized quite a bit in some of the later games, but she never stopped being an awesome badass. I think if you look at a character like original or even 1st reboot Lara and dismiss her as nothing but a sex object, if you can't see any value to the character other than her body and physical design then you have such ingrained problems with women that you rival the average misogynistic fanboy.

AND THEN to compare original or 1st reboot lara UNFAVORABLY to the new lara. Jesus.

She was sexualized quite a bit right from the beginning, though.

(Didn't mean the games weren't great.)

She wasn't sexualized as part of the story, though, is what pisses me off. She was a hot woman with big tits in tight clothes who was fucking boss at all points. She wasn't a damsel, she wasn't a fool, she wasn't bending over for some dude, and she didn't spend time screaming and crying and scared. She was a fearless tomb raider, first and foremost, fighting T-rexes for fun. Why doesn't that count for anything, because she had big tits? It's just another way of judging a female character for her looks no matter what she actually does.

Having big tits wasn't the only thing, though. Anyone who spends much time in the jungle or other harsh environments quickly finds out that skimpy clothing is not your friend. Even when it's hot and humid, because hot and humid environments often come with biting insects that carry nasty diseases. A crop top and short shorts is a terrible choice. If you're going to be raiding ancient tombs, you want a sturdy pair of pants in breathable fabrics that will tuck into your shoes so you don't get leeches.

Speaking as a woman with not-that-large-but-large-enough tits, I'd also add that going bra-less is also not practical when you plan to engage in demanding physical activity. I can't even imagine how sore I'd be after a day of that. Lara Croft might be a fucking boss and a smart woman, but she wasn't dressed like one originally, and I think we can all figure out why that was.

Yes, I know that. I'm one of those people whose eyes cross at Power Girl's ever-resurrecting boob window, so I understand how annoying impractical clothes on a female character can be, but what gets to me is when people act like clothes are so much more important than a character's behavior and treatment. Basically, classic Lara Croft's sexualization was incredibly minimal, she was a great title character in every other way who held her franchise (and paved the way for other female characters to hold their franchises) on the strength of a lot more than bralessness, but some people act like all that was meaningless. It's frustrating.

It would be, for fighting dinosaurs!

Countless jungle girls have fought dinosaurs in less.

Read Shanna the She Devil (Illustrated by Cho, so you KNOW it's going to be skimpy and full of incredibly muscular butts.)

You get it. That is exactly what I was trying to say.

And then there is the most recent game, which I admit I would have loved if it wasn't a frigging tomb raider game.

One does not play tomb raider in order to "protect" Lara (as one of the higher ups on the development team had said) you do not need to see lara croft as a menaced frightened little girl who needs your help to survive. That concept, that game, would have been a perfectly adequate idea for any game that was NOT A FUCKING TOMB RAIDER GAME.

And yet because she has more realistic boobs and is wearing pants this game is LESS sexist than the other versions?!?!

Yeah, I mean, I appreciate that it's an origin story for Lara before she gets badass, and therefore she has to be realistically untried, but when male characters are untried and scared, they're rarely if ever turned into crying traumatized messes for half the game whining about how they "hate tombs" (hardy-har-har). I just don't see how that was necessary to Lara's new backstory, and I'd have preferred boobs and shorts over that any day.

There's a looooot of things that need to fixed about women in video games, but damn it, Lara Croft wasn't one of them, and I resent her always being singled out as the worst when she was best.

You just get it. that's brilliant.

Would you like me to start a small religion based around you and your wisdom? It could be with or without human sacrifice, your call.

Haha, I was about to pass on the human sacrifice, and then I remembered all the people who've called Lara a whore...
