I've written fic for the MCU and my instinct was to put the fics in the Marvel Cinematic Universe archive but then I noticed there were at least two other categories and everyone seemed to post their fics to all of them so I just did the same thinking that's what you do. It still sort of bugs me a bit.

Your first instinct to tag them "Marvel Cinematic Universe" was the right one. That's the official title that Marvel uses, and if more fans would just get into the habit of using the correct title, it'd be a lot easier to clean up the tag mess.

Yep I kind of feel that is the correct way, but being a relatively powerless small time fan/infrequent contributor I don't think I can convince people. Tbh this is making me think "fuck it" about fan conventions and I'll just use the MCU tag (plus relevant individual films) in future.

My other thought was 'Marvel' was meant to cover non-MCU like Spiderman and such.

It is. Filtering by 'Marvel' automatically brings up all Marvel-related fics, whether it's stuff tagged with specific comics or specific MCU properties, or non-MCU movies.

'Marvel (Movies)' covers the MCU and non-MCU movies.

'Marvel Cinematic Universe' covers just the MCU.

But if you tag something with, for instance, 'Avengers (Marvel Movies)', it will still come up in any of those filters.

I'm an MCU wrangler and in an attempt to be helpful, I did one of those silly tumblr powerpoints on how exactly the nested MCU tags worked. It's right over here if it's helpful for anyone.

There is also a followup right here with a chart.

Ooh thank you. I'm going to admit I'm actually relatively new to AO3 so genuinely glad to see this because I'm a pretty nitpicky person in general so the idea that I may use tags incorrectly bothers me!

No trouble! Really, in general, if you tag with the relevant specific movie properties, the larger umbrella tags will automatically fall into place.

(And for the record, 'Avengers - Ambiguous Fandom' is an abomination, because that's the tag that covers both Marvel Avengers and Emma Peel and John Steed for people who just tag 'Avengers' without specifying.)

It was more or less self-serving. But it was fun. XD
