It is a bit annoying.

Are you me? That is one of the most annoying things on that site. MCU is probably my top read fandom but they need to streamline that shit.

Secret 6 - The Avengers (movie), fanfiction, Archive Of Our Own (fanfiction archive website)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2014-01-05 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a screen-capture of the fanfiction archive "Archive of Our Own". It's showing a list of various fandoms in their respective media categories. The secret maker has marked with red the following:

Cartoons & Comics & Graphic Novels

Marvel (59865)
The Avengers - Ambiguous Fandom (35199)
The Avengers (Marvel) - All Media Types (33932)

Movies

Marvel (59865)
Marvel (Movies) (50336)
Marvel Cinematic Universe (41659)
The Avengers - Ambiguous Fandom (35199)
The Avengers (Marvel) - All Media Types (33932)

TV Shows

Marvel Cinematic Universe (41659)
The Avengers - Ambiguous Fandom (35199)]

I have no problem with the Avengers/Marvel fandom, but this annoys me SO MUCH (especially the movies category, where it's literally the ONLY fandom featured).

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
That's definitely annoying.

I'm so glad I'm not the only person kinda annoyed by this.

Oddly, I think I approve

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2014-01-05 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The comics and the movies and so on have different continutities. This reduces the wank of "hey that's not how x went or how y feels!"

That's really more of a tag issue than anyone's fault exactly.

[personal profile] caerbannog 2014-01-05 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm okay with this. Sometimes I want movie!avengers, sometimes I want specific comic!Avengers...and sometimes I don't mind if they get mixed up a little.

I do however wish people would tag the right stuff so I'm aware which Avengers I am reading, especially comic related as I'm quite a few issues out of date.

[personal profile] dazzledfirestar 2014-01-06 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. All of this. It gets tricky when you start throwing characters from the comics into the MCU but still. For those of us who want to read different versions from different verses, it's pretty handy to have it all split up even if people aren't too clear on the "rules" of tagging for this kind of fandom.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
most of the people who work on the archive agree. there doesn't seem to be a better alternative though with the current system. if you take some of them off those lists people can't find the fic they want. it had better be fixed the next time the tagging system is updated.

I've written fic for the MCU and my instinct was to put the fics in the Marvel Cinematic Universe archive but then I noticed there were at least two other categories and everyone seemed to post their fics to all of them so I just did the same thinking that's what you do. It still sort of bugs me a bit.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Your first instinct to tag them "Marvel Cinematic Universe" was the right one. That's the official title that Marvel uses, and if more fans would just get into the habit of using the correct title, it'd be a lot easier to clean up the tag mess.

[personal profile] sparklywalls 2014-01-05 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep I kind of feel that is the correct way, but being a relatively powerless small time fan/infrequent contributor I don't think I can convince people. Tbh this is making me think "fuck it" about fan conventions and I'll just use the MCU tag (plus relevant individual films) in future.

My other thought was 'Marvel' was meant to cover non-MCU like Spiderman and such.

I'm an MCU wrangler and in an attempt to be helpful, I did one of those silly tumblr powerpoints on how exactly the nested MCU tags worked. It's right over here if it's helpful for anyone.

There is also a followup right here with a chart.

Blame all the brainless twits out there who refuse to learn how to tag their stories correctly. And the mods who just smoosh all the bad tags together instead of taking a chainsaw to them like they need to.

[personal profile] dizmo 2014-01-05 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It's hard to take a chainsaw to them, unfortunately, because each of those tags actually covers a different subset of nested fandoms.

But yeah, even those of us who work on them eyeroll at that particular artifact of the current top-fandoms page.

That's because people on AO3 don't know how to tag.

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-01-05 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, a lot of AO3 has been flooded by die-hard Tumblr users, who have a 'just tag it with everything and commentary, too' mentality. They don't quite realize that unlike Tumblr, where tags are for tracking and commentary, the tags on AO3 serve a much broader and much more organized purpose.

Re: That's because people on AO3 don't know how to tag.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
...maybe they don't understand that MCU will automatically be pulled up under Marvel Movies when they just tag for that because the AO3 doesn't explain just how the tags WORK and which tag governs which in the user interface, and they just want to make sure. I mean someone upthread linked a fucking powerpoint presentation to help people out and if I need that that is ridiculous. It's simply bad UI design.

Jesus fucking Christ YES. I pretty much stopped browsing AO3 altogether out of frustration.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
It is so annoying, but it hasn't caused me to stop browsing. I've just bookmarked the pages with the full list of fandoms so I don't have to put up with that shit.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-07 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Those tags annoy me for a different reason. I often go looking for fic for the other 'The Avengers' - British spies in the 1960's - and it can be quite difficult sort through all the new Marvel stuff. (FYI spy 'Avengers' exists in TV, movie and comic form too)
