This is a simplification of the argument. "A lot of the arguments against Skyler are misogynist"=/="you are a misogynist if you don't like Skyler".

Personally, I feel bad for her more than I like her.

No there are legit people who go "Skyler haters are misogynistic neckbeards"

There are but there are also legit people who see the first point I mentioned and interpret it as the second and that's who I personally see more often.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-07 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Most of the Skyler haters I see think Walt did nothing wrong.

the same way people sometimes say "men suck" when one man does something sexist.

it's exaggerated speech-- hyperbole, anon. not geared towards every single person ffs.

fandom is aware there are reasons not to like her, but by and large the people who don't like her are disgusting shitstains.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-07 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Strange. Flawed characters are the only kind I like.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-07 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Strange because only your tastes matter?

Not everyone shares your tastes in highly flawed characters. There's nothing wrong with wanting a few good points with a character. It doesn't mean they want perfect characters.

I think that there are perfectly legitimate reasons for not being a huge Skyler fan. I don't think that you HAVE to love her.

It's only when people get really vitriolic with their Skyler Hate and then go on to praise Walt or when they hate her for sexist reasons that I get mad.

I love Skyler though, flaws and all. Her flaws are part of what make her feel like a believable character to me. And I think people really underestimate how clever she can be.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-07 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's true that people overreact. But that's only because, you know, there really are a ton of people like that. Sucks but that's the way it is.

Secret 2 - Breaking Bad (TV series)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2014-01-07 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Skyler White, as portrayed by Anna Gunn, from the TV series "Breaking Bad". She is a woman with light skin, medium-length wavy blond hair, blue? eyes and wearing a salmon-colored bathrobe and smoking as she looks out a window.]

I don't like her. But that doesn't make me a misogynist Walt-worshipper. I don't really like ANY of the characters because they're all highly flawed and behave horribly at one point or another. That's the whole point of the show!

Secret Because: Fandom doesn't believe people like me exist and if you dislike Skyler you hate all women everywhere.

Anyone now remember when Gunn threw a tantrum that people don't like her character and wrote a long article whining about it?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-07 12:25 am (UTC)(link)

I don't know the character, but "I don't like any of the characters because they're flawed and that's the point" does not make any sense as an argument because plenty of people tend to like characters BECAUSE they are flawed. It's a very strange thing to say.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-07 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on what they mean by 'like'. Maybe OP means they don't like them because they wouldn't want to be friends with them but are still interested in them, whereas others would take 'like' to mean only 'be interested in them'.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-07 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
It makes sense to me? Sometimes characters are written to be unlikable for whatever reason. Some people may like them because of their flaws, but that doesn't erase the fact that the original intent of the writers was to portray them as a person who is not supposed to be liked.

Uh, people like and dislike different things? Plenty of people tend to like McDonalds because it's cheap fast food, but plenty of people dislike it for those very same reasons.

Personally, I find flawed characters interesting, but that's not the same thing as finding them likeable. So the characters in Breaking Bad are interesting to watch, but I don't want to have lunch or hang out with them.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-07 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Echoing the above comments, there's a world of difference between liking a character as a character and liking a character as a person. There are characters I find fascinating to watch, but repulsive as people. There are well-written, interesting characters with few redeeming qualities. I would not say I like them on the second level, because they're not very likable; I might, however, say that I like them as a character, because they are compelling to watch. Big difference.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-07 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
If you don't like all the characters, I cannot imagine someone singling you out as a misogynist for not liking her. It is when people hate the female characters (supposedly for their behaviors/actions) then love the male characters who do similar things (or sometimes even the exact same things) that I start to wonder. And those are generally the type of people I see called out. But I am guessing that I don't travel in the same circles as you.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-07 09:56 am (UTC)(link)
How to tell if you dislike Skyler because you're a misogynist or because you're just kind of dim:

If you HATE Skyler (and Marie) and don't hate Walt and Gus, etc, then you are misogynist.

If you dislike Skyler because she's flawed, and dislike all the characters because they are flawed, you are either a bit dim or you hate all humans, because all humans are flawed.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
If you dislike Skyler because she's flawed, and dislike all the characters because they are flawed, you are either a bit dim or you hate all humans, because all humans are flawed.

What? Your logic makes no sense. Yes, all humans are flawed, but some are more flawed than others, and there are different types of flaws that are received in different ways. For example, someone whose major flaw is punctuality is probably going to be a lot easier to like than someone whose major flaw is being a bigot.

If someone's flaws make them a genuinely awful, unpleasant person, it's perfectly reasonable and even natural not to like them.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-07 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god yes, this. I think it's part of Anna Gunn's talent as an actress that she made such a compelling character. My relationship with her character changed so much. I actually really hated her from episode one, with the way she was so disrespectful and dismissive of her husband. By the end, though I felt for her. I didn't like her, but she'd made mistakes and recognized she'd made mistakes, which was HUGE.

But I've definitely run into the 'YOU HATE SKYLER YOU ARE A MISOGYNIST' attitude out there. Mostly from tumblr. *surprise*?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
I hate Skyler because she is a passive aggressive hypocritical asshole. The fact that she's a woman is irrelevant. There are legitimate, character-based reasons to dislike her.
