But some characters ARE bland, generic white dudes who are only popular because they're bland generic white dudes. Obviously this doesn't apply to every white male character, but seriously, how else do you explain the fact that Agent Bland McWhiteypants Ward is featured in more Agents of SHIELD fic on AO3 than any of the other non-Coulson protagonists?

This

Easy. Most fic writers are women, most women are straight, straight women are attracted to men. Most fafnics are in fact fapfics. I wouldn't Agent Ward, but he's the closest thing to a conventional attractive guy (Coulson is too old, Fitz is ugly).

Problem solved.

I have noticed lately that when it comes to fanwork being mostly male it's "it's mostly women who are mostly straight so it makes sense that they would want to focus on men" and when it comes to original media it's "men can't identify as easily with female characters as women can with male characters".

Is this another "fanfic is nothing but shipping" thing?

+1

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Can you blame people for assuming all fanfic is shipping? I mean, whenever I hop onto any archive, I'm lucky if the entire first three pages of results aren't the authors shipping these or those characters together.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
That is such bullshit though.

Most fanfic is NOT fapfic. I've found that most people who claim that only think so because that's the only stuff they bother looking for. Bias confirmation, y'know?

Also: Sexual orientation =/= shipping preferences.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe fapfic wasn't accurate, but most fics are shipping or porn.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, I'm a genficcer. I like long plotty fics that resemble an episode of the actual canon TV show that I write for. And in my experience, the vast majority of fic is shipping fic (doesn't mean it can't have a plot, but it's heavy on the relationships). Genfic is a definite minority. I look for it, but it's harder to find than the shipping/porn fic.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS. I'm a genficcer, especially for a certain pair of characters in my fandom, but it's almost impossible to find genfic for them. Almost all of it is the two of them jumping into the sack whenever the author thinks it's appropriate. I've been writing genfic for them myself, trying to increase the number for the archive, but it hardly ever gets any views and I'm under the impression that people just want to fap most of the time when they write or read fic.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
This is very true of most fandoms.

You can write all the genfic you want to see (~if you want more genfic, write it~) but it doesn't do jack shit because all they want is sex.

At least they should admit that's what the greater part of fandom is (~I want to read about canon characters~) sex. (~but there's nothing wrooooooong with that~) instead insisting that if you want to see more genfic, just write it.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course there's nothing wrong with that, but when people who insist that they would love to see more plotty genfic out there only read and write porn, you start to view them as hypocrites. I'm tired of being one of the only three people in my fandom who cares about plots that have to do with something OTHER than sex.

Interesting example. I saw Ward as much blander than Coulson. Coulson always seemed like a regular guy to me, someone I could relate to. Ward had an angsty back story, hot love interest, and was played by someone I couldn't have identified in a line up. One white guy was likeable, the other was a Marty-Stu.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't help that Ward's played by a seemingly mostly wet behind the ears actor.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but I don't think that's what OP is saying. I think it's more along the lines of the non-specificity of the "bland, white male character" criticism being a really tired line. Yes, Agent Coulson is bland and boring. It's kind of his trademark, really, but that's another story.

It's just lazy to say "oooh, that character is so bland and boring and white" rather than getting into the specifics of the particular character. People who spout those generic lines (like "you sound white" or "blah, bunch of white guys") sound like parrots who aren't creative enough to think of valid criticism.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yes this thank you. I want more diversity in my cast too, especially people who are LGBT, but I'm not going to attack every heterosexual main character for being "so bland, so str8". It's dumb, very SJW, and accomplishes nothing other than looking like a douche who is unable to do any critical thinking.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
THIS.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
If creators would stop being so lazy as to make white guy characters who are boring in *exactly the same ways* maybe I'd be less lazy in complaining about them. :) You can only run down the same list of grievances so many times before it just gets tiresome.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Because he has Issues, and there's a sizable chunk of fandom that has the urge to "fix" guys with emotional trauma. Especially if it results in them being emotionally stunted or closed-off, because then they get the pleasure of making said character open up (directly through an OC, or vicariously through another canon character). It's one of the oldest tropes in fandom.

Actually, right now?

Jemma Simmons: 566 works
Grant Ward: 538 works

Simmons hopped ahead of Ward recently, so there's that at least.
