I've seen Pacific Rim five times, and I still can't tell the two young white guy actors apart just from still photos. I can't really tell the actors who play Thor and Captain America apart out of costume either. So when I hear "bland generic white guys" that's the kind of look I think of. Not anyone who actually has a distinctive appearance.

Legitimate question - do you have some form of face blindness?

(Also, the Pacific Rim characters are meant to be brothers. So, you know. Casting.)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Raleigh and Chuck aren't brothers, that's who I meant.

No, I really don't have face blindness, at least not IRL. I'm actually pretty good with remembering faces. Sometimes in movies and TV it happens, with people who have that perfect-Hollywood-face-symmetry thing going on.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, gotcha.

I do think it's a failure in American casting that there is a serious lack of distinctive features - everyone has to look so perfect, and a very narrow definition of perfect at that. IRL (for me, at least), it's the little imperfections that make people appear fascinating and/or attractive.

Yeah, I think a lot of it is that Hollywood does tend to pick people with similar looks and that people in movies and TV have to be a certain level of attractiveness. They're not the only ones with this problem, though. There are a couple of Bollywood actresses that I have trouble telling apart sometimes.

I the case of Raleigh and Chuck, I doThe Hobbit.

(No they're not. I mean, not if who you replied to means the generic hero one and the generic asshole one. They're not even from the same country.)

Yes, I was confused about who OP was referring to, and OP clarified upthread.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I genuinely don't understand this. I know some people have problems with face-blindness, but I'm assuming that's not what's going on here? Seriously though, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth look nothing alike. And with Pacific Rim? If you were to tell me that the guy who plays Raleigh looks like Heath Ledger, I'd be nodding along with you, but how are you getting him confused with the guy who plays Chuck? I only saw it once, but I don't remember any similarity between them besides race. And that they both possess, y'know, noses and things.

DA

Actually, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth do have fairly similar features.

...I'm still not seeing it. Even though you picked images where they have similar facial hair and everything, the shape of their eyes is different, and they have very different noses. Hemsworth's face is broader, while Evans's is longer. I honestly don't think they look any more similar than any other two reasonably conventionally-attractive men of the same race.

Yeah, I'm not saying they're carbon copies or anything, but I can see how, if I wasn't really familiar with them, I could get them mixed up.

I probably relate to this because I have a similar issue with Jason Statham and Daniel Craig. It's not like I absolutely can't tell them apart, just that I get them mixed up sometimes.

Eh, I don't see it. They look pretty different to me. But many actors you see do have the "Hollywood Hero" type features.

The first time I saw Pacific Rim, I thought the fact that Raleigh and douchebag Australian looked so similar was a plot point, like Chuck was a clone. Couldn't tell them apart unless one of them was speaking.

*Google image searches to confirm memory*

I'm so confused by this. I don't think they look similar at all...? Chuck looks kinda like Ben Browder with a stronger jaw, and Raleigh is a dead ringer for Heath Ledger. But I don't see how they look like each other...

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure it was a plot point, considering Chuck was basically Raleigh pre-brother death. They were foils for each other, because Raleigh got to mature and actually learn from his shit, where Chuck didn't.

I couldn't tell them apart at all (except their accents), I probably couldn't if I watched it again either...

That happens a lot to me in films where two characters look similar, which reminds me of a film where one of the guys was bad cop but acted good and the other one was good cop, but acted like a bad cop and I spent the whole film trying to figure out which one of them was on the screen at any time, because they looked exactly the same!

don't get me started on Inception, I still have no idea which one is which, and I did see it twice, just to try to figure it out. Only thing I know is that one of them looks hella fine in a suit.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait... how? JGL, Cillian Murphy, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Ken Watanabe, and Dileep Rao look nothing alike.

Thinking Javier Bardem and Jeffrey Dean Morgan look alike? I get that. But the guys in Inception look so different, I'm kind of baffled.

Inception was a completely different point, which clearly did not come out clear enough. The characters had no personality and I don't know which one is which, the story was bad and yes I mixed up like 3 of the main characters because to me they look similar.

I also don't recognize my favorite characters out of character if I don't spend some time to get to know the "real" them and even then I might not recognize them in another film or television show. It is partly because I am not really that visual* person and that I don't especially pay attention to the screen the first and/or second time I watch something.

So yes, to me they look similar...

*Which probably goes back to the fact that I lack the ability to close my eyes and picture something.

....same. I love love looove Pacific Rim but I still find it so damn hard to tell the difference between the two guys. Originally it was the three but I've finally got the father down, so now it's just the younger two.

It's so incredibly frustrating.

...Same with Thor and Captain America, now that I've looked them up. Without distinctive clothing or attitude they're all the same. :/

(Which was very annoying in the one PR scene where it kept switching between which guy was fighting and i'd be trying to work out if Gypsy Danger had just punched someone or maybe it was Striker Eureka and now who's in trouble...WAIT THERE'S MAKO OK IT'S GYPSY DANGER thank god for Mako.)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
... Yeah, same here. Well, definitely on the Pacific Rim pair, I can usually tell Evans and Hemsworth apart after the first second or so of confusion. But the PR guys are just so aggressively similar in size, build and colouring. It's not that they look like twins or anything, if you put up their close-ups side by side they're obviously different people, but picking them out of crowd shots or fast action shots is incredibly difficult for me.
