I'd argue that it's actually underrated, in that most people who flip through it are thoroughly confused and mistake it for a bad book because it's an unconventional approach to the medium.

But yes, if we're being quite honest the actual house narrative is the more interesting bit.

I agree with you re: the most interesting bit. I was fascinated by the house narrative and not nearly as engaged with the other narratives weaving through the story.

If *most* people are confused by the book then the problem is probably with the book.

Have you actually seen the book or flipped through it? And I don't mean the actual content of the book, I mean how the text is laid out. In some chapters it's very very weird, sometimes whole pages will be blank except for one word, et cetera.

No, I wasn't confused in the least, but I still thought it was an insufferably precious piece of shit, complete with the about-as-subtle-as-a-brick-to-the-face shout-outs to Borges.

You call it unconventional, I call it gimmicky. Flipping pages back and forth and turning the book upside down every now and then isn't enough to hide the fact that 80% of the actual content is boring.

i really liked the book but jesus fuck johnny truant was an insufferable dickweed

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
That was my impression exactly. Also, that all the weird fap-fantasy bullshit in his parts of the narrative could've (and should've) been cut without doing any damage to the book in the slightest.

'cuz i'm dethtoll that's why, i'm curmudgeonly!

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
Because Dethtoll evidently thinks himself superior for not realizing that House of Leaves actually is a piece of garbage.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Because House of Leaves ran over anon's dog.

More house!secrets. More! More!

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's terribly overrated and also pretentious as hell. And most fans of the book are the same.

Hmm... a secret I agree with. I thought House of Leaves was a fun read, but I get confused when people talk about how scary it is or how it is some kind of post-modern masterpiece.

[personal profile] dethtoll 2014-01-11 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
It's a creepy book, though I've never been outright SCARED by it. But as an example of post-modernism? I dunno, I think the way the book uses the medium is interesting -- maybe that's what people are talking about?

So, I was happily reading HOUSE of Leaves, enjoying it quite a bit. And then I got to the part about keep your eyes glued to the page because there's something behind you and as long as you don't turn around it can't get you but it is ready to bite or claw you but it doesn't matter which just don't lift your eyes from the page...

And I was like "OKAY I WON'T!"

For some reason I found that immensely creepy. Oh, and I was on a bus. There was literally no way some monster could be behind me.

Also, I love his sister's music.

However, I read one page of Only Revolutions and went "Nope! Now he believes his own hype."

Gotta say I love all the bizarchitecture secrets that people are posting lately. As a fellow lover of weird creepy space-bending mind-fucking buildings that may or may not exist, they make me very happy.

I bought this book having high hopes and ended up quite disappointed.

Unconventional layout + = Yes, please!

Unconventional layout + Boring story = Meh.

The way it's told should aid the storytelling and make it better. Paired with a boring story it just seems pretentious, or like they tried to make up the lack of content making the book seem different.

Unconventional layout + GOOD STORY = Yes, please!

Oops.

I don't think it's overrated but I'd like to document it properly and not just wander in! Of course it would probably still find a way to drive you mad seeing as it's probably a metaphor for insanity written by an insane person anyway...
