Hmm... a secret I agree with. I thought House of Leaves was a fun read, but I get confused when people talk about how scary it is or how it is some kind of post-modern masterpiece.

It's a creepy book, though I've never been outright SCARED by it. But as an example of post-modernism? I dunno, I think the way the book uses the medium is interesting -- maybe that's what people are talking about?

It's not the "post-modern", it's the "masterpiece" part I don't agree with. It is playful and post-modern, but it wouldn't have existed without Borges and Cortázar and Infinite Jest.

I found it very scary but then, it tapped into things that worry me a lot.

So, I was happily reading HOUSE of Leaves, enjoying it quite a bit. And then I got to the part about keep your eyes glued to the page because there's something behind you and as long as you don't turn around it can't get you but it is ready to bite or claw you but it doesn't matter which just don't lift your eyes from the page...

And I was like "OKAY I WON'T!"

For some reason I found that immensely creepy. Oh, and I was on a bus. There was literally no way some monster could be behind me.

Also, I love his sister's music.

However, I read one page of Only Revolutions and went "Nope! Now he believes his own hype."

Yeah that was how I felt about Only Revolutions, too. Could barely read it.

Me three.

I loved House of Leaves but OR is just no.

*takes Only Revolutions off to-read list*

To be fair, I read one page. But I got the feeling with HOUSE that he did it for art or fun and had a story to tell, pretentious claptrap or not. But with Only Revolutions, every word screamed "I'M MARK Z AND I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT HAVE A BOOK OF MY SHITTY POETRY WHERE THE CHARACTERS COME ACROSS AS MANIC PIXIE DREAM GIRLS AND WHIMSICAL PETER PAN TYPES!!"

No thank you.

I loved the book, but I also agree with you. For even more delicious pretentiousness, you should listen to his sister Poe's companion album "Haunted," which is pretty good musically, but also ridiculously pretentious.

*Points upthread*

I love Poe. Not too big a fan of the Hello album but I liked Haunted a lot. I also enjoy her work with Conjure One.

Haha, I was kind of laughing at that because it was just so in your face but I was legitimately uneasy at the same time.
