If you want good fic you shouldn't have a problem as long as you avoid Levi x Eren. It's the most popular pairing but it's complete shit both canon and fanon portrayal.

If you want a yaoi pairing with good dynamics and good fic then Erwin x Levi is where it's at.

Unfortunately if you like hetero the pickings are even slimmer. This fandom pretty much neglects hetero and even the canon yuri pair get's neglected for dumb shit like Eren x Levi.

I'd also suggest being very selective and wary of Jean/Marco because it's also popular but also all over the place in terms of quality.

I second Erwin/Levi, that's a more consistantly good pairing, especially after certain events in the manga have changed their dynamic.

Plus the hetero and yuri pairings aren't ignored, especially when Ymir/'Krista' are pretty popular within the fandom.

Ymir/Christa is popular when it comes to fanart, but is really scarce when it comes to fanfic.

Any other yuri pairing is rare. *crying over my lack of Annie/Mikasa all day everyday*

I found a decent amount of fic for the one pairing that interested me, Mikasa/Levi, so the het is definitely out there. From what I gather, it is still only a small percentage of the fic but when a fandom is as big as that one, a small percentage can still amount to a decent amount.

Can you rec some Levi/Mikasa fic because I am genuinely curious for a while now?

But yeah, if you can't find het fic in this fandom or yuri fic for Ymir/Krista, you're not putting much effort in searching at all.

It's not that we can't find fic... it's that we can't find quality fic

Oh there are definitely some het and yuri fic, but the amount we have to search through is little. If you really like a ship you could burn through all it's best fics fast.

Yumikuri at least does better than most het ships, but not as much as it deserves seeing as how it's pretty much canon.

It's like Eren x Levi has this endless supply. Even though a lot of it isn't good, at least it keeps coming. I wish I could force myself to like this pairing just so I'd have more stuff to look at, but it just does not appeal to me on any level whatsoever.

I haven't really delved into fandom too much, but I enjoy tIt's not my absolutely favourite fic in the world but I do enjoy it enough to subscribe to updates.

Ereri is fluffy random Aus, Eruri is kinky random AUs. Look for canonverse non-explicit and you might find more decent stuff.

eh, I ignore the stuff that comes out of tumblr mostly so I haven't come upon the priest kink stuff, but at least the "kinky random AUs" take their dynamics into consideration from what I've seen so far.

I'd have to agree with this. Obviously Erwin/Levi isn't 100% quality fic, but I have been pleasantly surprised by the consistent quality of it for the most part, even if a lot of it is smut. (I think this has to do with the Erwin/Levi fanbase being a little bit older than the rest of the Shingeki fandom).
I just wish I could find similar quality and quantity of fic with other pairings in the fandom.

tbh at this point I'm finding a lot of Eruri just as formulaic as the Ereri, only with a lot more kink.

Ereri is basically "cute younger slightly-ragey dude in lust with older deadpan sort of jerkish guy".
Eruri is "tsundere just waiting to be dominated with control freak perv who is huge and did we mention huge wink wink"

The irony is that I actually like both pairings (and even write for both, though not kink and not smut and mostly canonverse so that tells you how much popularity I can expect, haha), but at this point I don't see that Eruri is 'better' than Ereri in terms of quality.

I agree with you that both pairings have a great deal of generic fic, but I just haven't seen any very well-written, thoughtful, and in-character fic for Ereri that I do come across in Eruri. Of course there is just so much Ereri that I'm possibly passing it over. But I just have not come across it. (I'm also admittedly picky about Eren's characterization, as he's my favorite character, but still.)

I agree with you on the characterization, and I myself am picky about it, especially with Eren. I think tbh that part of the reason that Erwin/Levi come off as more IC is because there's less characterization for them in canon, so you've got a lot of leeway that comes off as IC to people. Unlike Eren, who's got a lot more characterization and is harder to get right imo.
So I think that Eruri and Ereri aren't even judged on the same scale, because in canon Erwin's kind of a minor character - even more minor than Levi, who's had more scenes on his own or with Eren.
So Ereri writers have a more difficult time of it in the first place, imo.

Besides, like I said, I've seen so much random-kink-eruri at this point that I think that its claim to quality is rapidly going down the drain.

I agree with anon above that there's of course, badfic in every pairing, but haven't seen the same kind of thoughtful, solid, mature characterization I've seen in Eruri fic in Ereri fic. On the calibre of say, Audacity and Carthage's BDSM AU. In that kink is not just for ~hot porn~ and very much part of their characters.

I'm a mainly canon person, so it discounts most AUs for me.

Mostly, it's hard to reconcile the age and power difference in Ereri for many people I think, which results in lots of OOC. I think they work great as mentor/pupil (or alternately hot D/s pet dynamics but ahem) in fic though

I personally love it in fic when Levi is just Eren's mentor, or his older uncle, or something of the sort, and it just doesn't jump into straight out slash. I'd honestly love to see more of that

I will be honest. BDSM is not part of their characterization. It's pure, 100% fanon. It's fanon that's fucking everywhere, to the point where it's almost impossible to find non-BDSM eruri, but it's nothing more than fan characterization. This isn't canon, and it's gotten to the point where it colors almost every written interaction between Levi and Erwin.

I'm not going to start tearing apart fics one by one because that's not the point, but I think that when two BDSM fics are hailed as "the best the ship has to offer" that says a LOT about how far from canon we've gotten with two characters who are not actually a BDSM relationship. It's nice for kink, but ultimately, it's still twisting their characters.

If you wanted me to rec eruri, I've got other fics I like much better, and which I think are much truer to the characters. People just don't notice anymore because BDSM Eruri has become entrenched in fanon.
