I'm not too surprised to hear this- I worked for a local regional council a couple of years ago. It was a 25 hour a week job but I basically only had about 5 hours a week of actual stuff to do.

The rest of the time, I was goofing off with colleagues, surfing the internet and playing Pokémon SoulSilver on the sly.

Cherish this job, OP, because if you ever get a job in the private sector, it will be nothing like this experience.

Such private sector jobs do exist, but they tend to be due to, say, a boss who's a micromanaging nutjob who slows productivity to basically nil with their inane rules and amazingly has no idea how to keep tabs on computer usage by employees. Thus, dinking around online while on the clock.

Second worst job I ever had. 8|

I have one of those jobs! I work in a library in government documents - no one gives a crap about my collection and I spend a lot of time surfing the net.

It actually sucks pretty bad. I hate having a job that doesn't matter, doing things without meaning. :(. I wish I were busy, to be honest. There are only so many little projects I can come up with.

I'm a public sector worker and I work well over 20% extra hours over what I'm paid for every single damn week and barely have time to eat lunch at my desk, so screw you.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-16 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
GET BACK TO WORK OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-16 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
NO.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-16 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Stop that!

(Anonymous) 2014-01-16 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I don't wanna.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-16 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Surprisingly, I am totally okay with this use of tax dollars.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-16 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think the world might be a little better if MORE public servants used our tax dollars this way. I wonder what fandoms the guy the boro sends out to measure grass likes??

Same. Of all the madness I've heard about going on in the public sector this is the thing that bothers me the least.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-16 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
So am I, and do I, but only since I got a phone with internet capability, since I know for a fact my net usage is monitored and restricted. ...And mostly only when I have nothing else to do, waiting on people getting back to me, etc. To make up for it I spend no time discussing local sports with my coworkers.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-16 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
If it keeps you from dying of boredom, you're still around to do your job, so you're just having yourself a morale booster.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-01-16 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I was kind of expecting wank and wailing and gnashing of teeth. FS, you have failed me.

No, no, no. Y'see, you're actually working.

If you'd said you're on welfare, you probably would have caught a few fish at least.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-16 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I would too, OP, but the idea of reading fanfic at work squicks me out a bit so I just troll reddit all day.

I had a job a few years ago that left me with nothing to do (I was a step-student), so I surfed the net and read fic. They didn't care. They knew I had nothing to do. I was always confused why they had need for a step-student in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-16 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
I had a job like that, except my boss used to complain I wasn't working.
I got tired of pointing there wasn't any work to do, so I quit.

One of these days, they'll install some monitoring software, and that'll be the end of that. I hope you're sticking to the SFW fanfic. (Guess that relegates you to genfic.)

Same here! I work in a government call centre and read fic on my iphone between calls. Esp during slow periods. I usually take around 70 - 80 calls a day, but it's been down to 30 this time of year.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-16 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
My last job was like that-- when it was busy, it was busy, but most of the time it was slow. My boss honestly didn't care what I did on the internet as long as everything that needed to be done got done on time, so I read a lot of manga and RPed.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-16 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I get a feeling a lot of people in offices do that (or other stuff that isn't work related). I'm a moderator on a small art site and there is some sort of chat in the forum. And since we keep an eye on it as well, I see a lot of people chatting there while at work. I always wonder what they do all day if they have that much time to complain about how long they still have to work that day.
