Hahaha, if only it didn't have the worst male-wish-fulfilment fantasies about lesbians and "strong women".

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, pretty much.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
fuck you, I'm a bisexual woman and she turned me on to no end. And I like her character.

This.

See, it's not so much the character on her own but a combination of a) the character compared to her original ACD incarnation and b) the character in the current media landscape of shitty female/LGBT representation.

Everyone knows that "lesbians" are only "lesbians" until they meet the right guy.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I think the main issue most people have with it is a combination of "Male Fantasy Wish Fulfillment" and the fact that there are so few full on, stated gay characters on TV that having them attracted to someone of the opposite sex has some very icky implications/undertones to it.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
*Especially* lesbians, who a lot of people have trouble believing in anyway. Who wouldn't want cock if they could get it?

I think I would like Irene in a rainbow of women but as a spotlight in among the sausage fest she kinda makes me roll my eyes?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
This! Though I would adjust that to "I would like Irene among a rainbow of women, and among a rainbow of queer characters."

Which is about what the secret above this one says about River. At least Moffat is consistent?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
If the show had actually given me the impression of consciously going for the interpretation you give here, I might agree with you. But it didn't. It went for "Sherlock is JUST THAT GREAT" and also made her attraction to him into an exploitable weakness instead of intellectual admiration.

And what's more, it did so in spite of the fact that "this man is so BAMF he can cure lesbians" and "homosexuality isn't as real or firm an orientation as heterosexuality" has been an annoyingly pervasive and damaging trope in media for a long time.

But that's what fic is for! God knows I've enjoyed fics reframing problematic characters in positive ways without changing their characterization often enough before. :)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone knows that "gays" can go for the opposite sex at the drop of a panty, but heterosexual men like Sherlock and John are het until they die.

I really enjoyed Irene's episode and am sad it gets hate everywhere. That being said I realise why some people hate it, it's just those factors aren't a deal breaker to me.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of problematic fiction is like that. I think because I am white, I possibly can put up with some racist shit that I recognise as racist, but doesn't distress me to the point of deal-breaking. Whereas as a lesbian, there's a lot of nnnnnnnnope about the Irene episode for me. (Conservative straight people would say I'm "biased" HAHAHA whereas they aren't.)

I was ok with it too. It was fun. An interpretation closer to ACD would be better perhaps, where she finds an ocupation she likes (I think marriage at that times equils job nowadays), where Sherlock runs after her and where he doesn't win.

This episode is fine for me, because I don't think often about representation, and I find Sherlock hot, so for me it was a no surprise she liked him. I was like "sure, why not?". I didn't even catch that she was a lesbian tbh.

Oh, no, as a character she was deliciously evil if you ignore the last five minutes of that episode. I would've loved her if she was, I don't know, Olive Cornell or something else with the initials OC. As Irene Adler, nope, not buying it. Irene was smarter than Sherlock. Irene was trustworthy (that was a pretty major part of her character). IRENE WAS NOT SHERLOCK HOLMES' GIRLFRIEND AND SHE DIDN'T WANT TO BE! I liked the character in BBC's Sherlock, but not as Irene.

I would probably find her basically tolerable if it weren't for the end of the episode.

It is just so, so, so bad.

It's not that she's that bad of a character based on solely internal logic. IA about the interesting-ness of fluid sexualities and non-physical attraction and all that. However, she is really, really bad in the context of a) how women are and have been portrayed in the media, b) how queer characters are and have been portrayed in the media, c) male attitudes towards lesbians and women in general, and d) the original Irene Adler.

I wouldn't have minded so much about the lesbian being attracted to a man thing (because sexuality is fluid, and there are lesbians who have occasionally found a man attractive but it's so rare that they continue to identify as lesbian) if they'd actually shown Irene being attracted to women in that episode.

The whole episode revolved around a lesbian's attraction to a man. IIRC, the only time that Irene being sexually or romantically active with women was mentioned was through her work which isn't the same (especially since she was happy to dominate men through her work too, her work wasn't a reflection of her sexuality).

I agree. I liked her, i liked the episode, i never thought she wanted to have sex with Sherlock, she was just fascinated by him and yes, attracted, but they'd never had fallen into bed.

The final scene didn't bother me so much, mostly because sometimes the hero *does* need help, and surrounded by people with swords and guns intent on killing you might be a bit of a sticky wicket, as they say. I thought it was fun that they kept in touch and that he'd obviously travel a good distance, and quickly, to help her.

My main problem with her is that she just doesn't seem to warrant the fascination Sherlock has with her. She's not stupid, but she's not Moriarty-level brilliant either. I could understand Sherlock's fascination with him because he'd set up some intricate stuff with his whole master criminal services and the way he played with Sherlock was pretty damn impressive. If she'd shown up before him or they'd built her up a bit more, I might have bought it. But as it was they had him spend half the ep moping over her and the very end rescuing her and I couldn't really figure out why he gave a crap.

Second, she was a complete ass. She treated her clients (willing business relationship on both sides) like crap by making them think she was going to spill their secrets and she mucked up an undercover terror ops investigation just for the lulz. She was not a nice person and in the end she gets off scott free, no consequences. Anyone who can pull that kind of crap and then go dancing off into the sunset is going to piss me off.
