Just want to politely request people not start arguments about House of Leaves again so soon after the last one, right?

Anyway, about House of Leaves vs. Only Revolutions -- I love HoL, and OR is a bunch of pretentious unreadable bullshit. Someone said something last time that pretty much sums it up -- OR is proof that Mark Z. Danielewski believes his own hype following HoL's success.

Give HoL a try -- I promise it's an actual book, if a super-weird one in terms of formatting and narrative -- and not just shitty poetry.

You didn't miss much. Just another dumb argument. It was about a week ago.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-19 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Argument? You mean, people saying it's overrated? That wasn't an argument, that was people talking about a book.

Plus, you are not the person to advocate avoiding arguments. You stir up shit all the time, lest we forget what happens whenever anyone mentions Questionable Content around you.

And yet here you are bringing it up and here I am not giving a shit, what now?

I figured that much based on the sudden sharp change in tone. Also the "LOL DETHTOLL YOU'RE A JERK" bit. Don't worry. :)

People got very and needlessly aggressive at someone saying they liked House of Leaves.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-21 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody was "aggressive" toward anyone saying they liked House of Leaves. They were understandably pissed off by Dethtoll and others (including you, as I recall) insinuating, or saying outright, that those who hadn't liked it weren't intelligent enough to get it.

Nope, not me. Plenty of people got angry about it though.

They do!

The people I know who loved House of Leaves weren't fond of it either, if it that helps. I'm not really a fan of House of Leaves (for me the style wasn't supported by the substance) but I'd recommend anyone to at least flick through it in the library in case it piques their interest.

I'm halfway through J.J.Abram's S. myself, which might belong in a similar book category. I was enjoying it (the book itself is supposed to be an old library book and as well as the narrative in that book there's lots of notes written in the margins) but now that [SPOILER] it seems that it all comes down to some giant conspiracy I'm not as interested. I'll finish it, but it might occupy the same space as House of Leaves to me if it continues in this vein.

What book is it?

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-01-18 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of liked House of Leaves. It was terrifying as I was reading, but after I actually thought about it without the ominous tone of the words, I realized that there wasn't actually anything scary. I'd still recommend it to certain people (like those who still like Steven Moffat's writing).

Only Revolutions by the same author. It's garbage.

That is a pretty book. Also, when I was scrolling and only saw a few inches of the top of the secret, I thought it was a kiwi.

Everything i've read about both of these books leads me to believe they would irritate me beyond belief as a reader.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-19 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
So, that picture here - is that the cover? Because I would cringe away from reading a pyhsical copy of this book in that case. The thought of touching the picture of an eye every time I hold the book makes my own eye itch XD

(Anonymous) 2014-01-19 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
You can love what you love and hate what you hate, doesn't bug me, but yeah I would say it's worth giving of Leaves a try if you were ever remotely interested in doing so. I picked up OR because I had loved it so much and found it so literally unreadable I quit after two pages.

They have nothing in common, structurally.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm getting the implication that you have actually finished reading this book, which is impressive. As someone who loved HoL but couldn't get through more than three pages of OR, I always assumed that if you could read through it, you probabaly could at least tolerate its... unique style.
