I've always wondered the age demographics of the asexual/aromantic people on tumblr, because around 80/90% of them I've seen tend to skew very young, and I can't help but think that they are going to discover that their sexuality is fluid once they're older.

I mean, that's not a bad thing, but it still makes me curious.

I've wondering this as well. I'm in my 30s and identify as asexual, but the community (which I admit I am not a part of so this is just observation) does seem rather young. Particularly the loudest voices.

Like you said, not a bad thing. I think in general it's the younger crowds that tend to feel the need to shout their labels for the world to see. When you get older it's often not as big a deal. Maybe that's just me and my friends though.

I kind of wonder about fandom's orientation demographics, because I feel like there's a lot more queer people in fandom. Or at least a lot more open about it.

It makes me curious too. It's not like 'har har your identity is invalid!' but frankly most 15 year olds really don't have their sexuality figured out. People don't finish going through puberty until they're in their twenties, often, and sexual drives and desires can change wildly in that time.

I used to id as asexual, but it turns out it's because I had some health issues. When my sex drive suddenly kicked in and it was like 'yes give me all the men and women and everyone let me sex them up now.'

It's possible - my own orientation has been all over the place as I've learned new vocabulary. When I was thirteen, I came out as bisexual because I thought both girls and boys were pretty. When I was sixteen, I said I was a lesbian because the idea of being in a romantic relationship with a boy was disgusting. When I was eighteen, I said I was bisexual again because I found a man attractive, but was terribly confused because I thought he was nice to look at but wouldn't have wanted to be with him sexually.

It wasn't until my twenties (I'm in my late twenties now) that I was able to put it into words - pan/biaesthetic (in terms of who I think is visually attractive, leaning more towards feminine and androgynous people than masculine), grey homoromantic (romantically attracted to women, but it takes me an extremely long time to develop those romantic relationships - it probably is leaning a bit towards aro), and asexual. Queer, for short. This is how I would identify at this moment - there could be someone that would change that.

So I do think that age and inexperience is a part for the skew, but the opposite is also true - a lot of people will slowly learn new vocabulary and concepts, and I'd rather use phrasing like that instead of how I'd usually refer to myself - 'freak'.

But...don't most people have the ability to see that both sexes are attractive? The lack of sexual urge/attraction just means it's not part of your sexual identity. So I don't really understand the biaestetic part. Like, I find so many people nice to look at. All sorts of gender and types are attractive, but I'm only sexually attracted to women. Doesn't mean I can't find men attractive. Not trying to bash, just honestly don't get it.

It is borderline unnecessary, yeah. It can be a good counter to, "Wait, but I thought you liked women, why are you saying that he's attractive?" It's basically the, "Wow, they're hot -" response without also adding, "- I want to spend my life with them" / "- I want to have sex with them."

But yeah, if I was being succinct, that'd be the first part I'd drop, and just say that I'm romantically but not sexually attracted to women without adding that there's some very nice-looking masculine and androgynous people out there.
