Just remember that people like that are often online for a reason - they can't function in the real world. Because if they can't even pretend not to be a sexist whack job online, imagine what they're like in real life.

It's the opposite though.
Sexist assholes can function in RL; people who always blame others and who don't try to do something to help themselves (like therapy, if they have triggers) have a hard doing functioning in RL and usually end escaping online.

Which is not a solution, is not healthy and may end with them discovering there are assholes even online.

Actually, I find this is often the opposite with people.

They tend to act more moderate "IRL", because it helps them get through life, then vent their whacked-out opinions online, because it can act as a sounding board so they never have to question their view of reality.

Then why use a sounding board? By definition that's what a sounding board is for - questioning a thought or opinion and getting a second POV with potential future modification of the opinion in mind.

I think you mean "echo chamber".

Actually--I'm finding it's often the opposite with sexism. They hold their tongue in public and then say horrible things about women online.

Ha, everyone beat me to it. But yeah, we're seeing a rise in online misogyny in large part because we're winning in public--outward sexism is frowned upon.

I think it's also one of the reasons a lot of online spaces are getting more racist. You usually can't say that shit in public.

I'm having a very difficult time trying to figure out if I should consider this a positive development or not. On the one hand, people can't be as openly racist or sexist in public spaces anymore as they used to, and that's good. On the other hand, we now have sexism and racism every fucking where online, and some of them are getting really aggressive and vicious about it (see: the blog "return of kings," if you weren't planning to eat anything tonight.) I'm not sure if this is the last rebellious gasp before society as a whole finally internalizes the idea of racial and sexual equality, or if this is a sign of a whole lot of simmering time bombs waiting to explode.

I don't think society will ever fully internalize the idea of racial and sexual equality---I don't think that's in our nature. That is, by the time we get over the current racial issues we'll likely find new ones. When we get over our current sexual hang-ups we'll invent new ones. There's no enlightenment, just incremental improvement.

I think we can be winning the current battle while time bombs are simmering, if that makes sense. I think we're equipped to fight them.

Well the sexist and racists online are still turning down people for jobs in real life and just not telling them why.

I think the "winning" thing depends on what forum you're looking at.

*brought to you by someone who watches European news and was interested/appalled when a black (possibly the first in his country??) parliamentary minister had bananas and racial slurs hurled at him by other parliamentary ministers. They eventually apologized but there was no punishment and they apparently got to keep their jobs.*

I don't even have to browse. Sometimes the casual sexism that shows up on my news feed is kind of mind-boggling.

I don't need to really browse either. I recently deleted a ton of people, because I was tired of seeing their negativity every freaking day.
