Who said this and what gives them the absolute right to dictate what makes a good story?

If I can talk to you on a personal level for a second... Whenever I see you posting here about writing it makes me happy because it seems to me that you are at it every day. But it seems like you worry a lot about what random people who you will never meet think of your writing. They are not looking over your shoulder, and their complaints are petty and stupid anyway.

Just write your thing, jaybie_jarrett.

Thanks.. I really do try.

Though I'm very worried about offending and upsetting people. It's sort of a flaw of mine, I think too much about pleasing everyone , or at least avoiding pissing off the really vocal people.

Honestly, if you really want to share stories with people, you're going to have to accept that there will be people who get pissed off. A lot of people are stupid and will misinterpret you! And you're not perfect, either. You'll probably end up writing things that deserve some criticism. Either way, you cannot please everyone. Make that your daily mantra. Every author and every public figure ever has had to acknowledge this. I'm still struggling with it myself, so I wish you the best of luck.
