And just in case, by 'into it' I mean into otaku crap.

Actually, I was an anime geek back in the day. Slayers, Fushigi Yugi, Inu Yasha, Cowboy Bebop, etc. The shit in this secret is not 'regular character design.' It's just gross.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
DA

It is skeevy pandering to otaku and people act like that it isn't becoming worse. Sure, there has always been pandering but not to this extent.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
For god's sake, this is Kancolle we are talking about, it's 100% otaku pandering. It's like watching a porn movie and bitching because it's only sex scenes and there is no plot.

There are still tons of manga and anime that aren't otaku pandering. Trust me, I would never watch or read an otakushit manga or anime and there are still tons of things I can enjoy with no pandering.

Aryt

I was talking about in general. Otaku pandering has become more mainstream/pervasive. There's still a lot of shows coming out that don't pander to them. However, it seems like slowly each season has more shows catering to 'em. I dunno, I guess my criteria for otaku pandering is low.

I mostly focus on manga and watching older stuff these days.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Otaku and fujoshi are the only ones buying anime, so expect even more pandering in the future. Only people who are doing it for artsy reasons and not for the money will produce non pandering anime.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I know that, anon. It is inevitable. Bones is usually pretty good at producing fairly original/nonpandering stuff.

What are some anime/manga you recommend?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Boku no Pico is pretty good. Or Shounen Maid Kuro-kun.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Oh you.

If you're looking for somewhat recent anime with little sexualization/pandering and are above average in quality, I'd say check out Kyousogiga, Silver Spoon, or Uchouten Kazoku.

(I'm also currently watching Shin Sekai Yori, which so far is really, really, good and hasn't had any issues yet with pandering/sexualization.)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the recs! And omg, I need to start reading Silver Spoon again. I conpletely forgot about it.

Yeah, that's the problem. Those shows you listed are shows for regular people, shows that anyone can watch and enjoy, the one in the secret is for otakus (otaku as in the Japanese word, not the American one 'I watch anime and read manga I'm an otaku'). But it's still pretty tame, there are character designs far worse. See Strike Witches-

[personal profile] iceyred 2014-01-24 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
So first you call the design in the secret a 'regular' character design.

I list off a bunch of shows that have designs that are nothing like that.

You say those shows are for 'regular people.'

It's possible you're a different anon, but either way I'm standing by the fact that the secret design is gross. And just because there are worse things out there doesn't mean it isn't gross.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
"Gross"

Are you six, make a proper grown up comment, no one even slightly cares about what you find "gross".

[personal profile] iceyred 2014-01-24 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, Anon, did I make you angry?

Sick...perverted...pick one.

Also, this is a forum dedicated to expressing opinions about media. Mine is just as valid as anyone else's. Sorry not sorry that bothers you.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, ignoranced always makes me angry and I remember when here had much more nuanced less childish views of sexuality and media interest.

p.s. you earn "validity" and respect. Just because you happen to have some dumb useless opinions doesn't mean that you get to pretend they're anything like equal to an eloquent explanantion of why someone likes or dislikes something.
iceyred: By singlestar1990 (Default)

[personal profile] iceyred 2014-01-24 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
'Ignoranced.' Hang on, I want to appreciate the irony for a second while at the same time laughing at an anon talking about validity and respect and pretending they had an eloquent explanation of why they liked something that looks like a thirteen year old dressed in a stripper outfit.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Spelling error = anything to do with being educated or ignorant. Huehuehuehue

And you're forgetting the catgirls, they make it extra sophisticated.

Don't bother.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's a regular character design, yes, because there are tons of anime, manga or VN with similar character designs. They are pretty common. No one who is into anime would be surprised by them, because they are the same shit that we have seen hundreds of times before.

You listed some shows from 10 years ago, shows that aren't representative of how anime looks, especially not nowadays when most shows are "cute girls doing cute things".
iceyred: By singlestar1990 (Default)

[personal profile] iceyred 2014-01-24 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Just because something is common and everyday doesn't mean it's not disgusting. Cute girls doing cute things don't have to look like that.

I recently watched Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit. It didn't look like porn.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Excuse me it's more like 25%: http://anichart.net/winter

And there's only like 1 or 2 SOLs a season.

[personal profile] darkmanifest 2014-01-24 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I've watched a ton of anime over the years, and this kind shit is niche if it's anything, hentai fantasy bullshit that is not universal to the artform. The idea that it's representative sounds like something someone whose only exposure to anime has been fapping to La Blue Girl would say.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
There are several shows every season with sexualized female characters, I wouldn't call it niche at all. Just this season, there are (at least) five shows that are bad enough to make me cringe and give-me second hand embarrassment, plus all the others that aren't that bad but still make me raise my eyebrows.

But isn't it specific genres of anime where it's popular? I mainly follow the fantasy/scifi/action/adventure side of things, and while those genres have their share of T&A, that special brand of ecchi fanservice doesn't seem to crop up often, if at all. I do keep my distance from most comedies and day-in-the-life anime for a reason.
