I vaguely remember hearing that a lot of MASH fans were so taken with a female extra in the opening credits that they actually found a way to get ahold of casting records from when it was filmed and found out who she was. Not 100% sure it was this woman, nor do I have any idea where to find out what they found out.

If you are purely talking of the fictional character she represents, sounds like a job for fic!

I've been composing snippets of MASH fanfic in my head ever since I was a kid watching the reruns with my dad. A lot of speculative fic about the inevitable ways the war changed Charles and fic about Hawkeye's childhood in Crabapple Cove, Maine and his inability to adjust to its slower paced life after the war, plus reunion fic with BJ and Hawkeye. Most especially though, I liked POV fic from the tertiary characters like the unnamed nurses. I loved that the show seemed to tap into that when they did that one episode about Nurse Kelly.

In case you get the urge to read some you didn't write, Yuletide always has a ton of MASH fic and it is usually awesome.

Arrgh, it's killing me that I can't remember which Travis McGee book has him watching reruns of MASH in a hotel room and thinking about her - he strength and energy and the fact that she's perpetually frozen in time, running towards the wounded. He wonders what the actress who played her thinks of it all. It's really touching.

It seems like she made a big impression on a lot of people.

Her name is Kathlyn Baker. She's not an actress which is why you don't see her in anything else. One of the MASH directors thought she looked interesting and put her into that shot.

I find her incredibly hot. (Straight female speaking here LOL.) I think it's a combination of the shape of her face, her proportions, and her intensity/activity. She looks like one hell of a woman who'd throw her heart into whatever she chose to do with her life. :D

I'm not sure what search terms you'd want to use, but in the Usenet archives at Google Groups there are alt.tv.mash posts from Larry Gelbart from the last ten or fifteen years of his life, some talking about the woman in front in that shot with updates about her life at the time.
