This makes 0 sense to me, but I am insanely happy and amused that there is soprano vs alto wank on Tumblr.

I didn't know this was a thing. How is Let It Go a song for sopranos??

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Because if there's a single note in a song that you can't personally hit, it automatically means it's for sopranos, omg the voice discrimination, or something?

Because it was written for Idina Menzel, who's a soprano, and it's pitched accordingly.

I'm a mezzo soprano so I can't really have a hat in this argument (not that I was aware of it before reading this secret). My difficulty in singing "Let it Go" isn't so much the notes, but the fact that I don't feel my particular voice can make a seamless enough bridge between the lower, more talky parts and the chorus. Both sound fine, but it sounds like two different people trading off on singing if I run through the whole song. I do think it could be mastered with a hell of a lot of practice and my voice coach though.

I have the same problems you do, and ended up mentioning them to my voice teacher. She said Idina's belt is actually a form of head voice, not pushed up from the chest. It's just placed in this weird place back behind the soft palette or something. She demonstrated it to me, and I tried to copy her but couldn't replicate it for the life of me.

They aren't even altos!

Well aren't you the most annoying person in your high school's production of Les Mis

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, man I wish. The coolest thing my high school ever did was Cabaret.

In college we did a lot though.

TRANSPOSING, MOTHERFUCKERS, HAVE YOU HEARD OF IT?!

[personal profile] othellia 2014-01-29 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Haha! I'm a soprano and have difficulty singing this song for the same reasons mezzo-soprano anon above does, so I transpose it a lot when I sing it too. Although I usually push it half an octave up rather than down.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
People can enjoy it without being a singer. Most of my friends who I've shown it too aren't singers and they still got a laugh out of it. You could just enjoy it without being so damn critical. It won't kill ya, I promise.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
All the people trying and failing to sing Let It Go and blaming it on their voice type is pretty funny. No, honey, it's not a song meant for sopranos - you just can't sing.

OMG, THANK YOU so much. I watched that and I spent the whole time going "huh? this is an alto song!" I so much wanted to comment and tell her to find herself a good vocal coach who could teach her how to use her 'crappy head voice' properly, because she clearly wasn't, and work on her passaggio, and stop trying to belt because Idina's singing isn't even that great.

It's kinda a shame because the lyrics are actually really funny.

...that's the POINT. It's like the one alto song in like... a million and one Disney films.

Yeah, her voice is already pretty strained on the deeper notes so no wonder she can't sing the high notes properly either. It really sounds like she's making a real effort singing right from the start and if you hear the effort behind it it's pretty obvious the voice isn't well trained enough.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Are you kidding me? That voice is just bad period. This girl needs to learn how to sing on pitch before bitching about crappy head voice sound. The best notes in that entire parody were her crappy head voice notes, because she at least sang in tune.

I know dozens of very good altos that would eat this girl for breakfast. SMFH

THANK YOU. I'm a soprano and I would have trouble singing this song because it requires a major belting voice. It's not about alto vs. soprano.

[personal profile] iggy 2014-01-29 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
It's definitely the belting aspect. The highest note in the song is a high E, which she only hits a couple of times, but when she hits it, she belts it.

All the people bitching that they can't sing this song properly "because it's yet another Disney song for soprano omfg it's unfair" just make me feel better about my own crappy attempts.

Because at least I have the courage to acknowledge that the reason they're crappy attempts is because I have little practice at the kind of singing this song requires, not because it's out of my range.

And at least I'm in tune when I try. Unlike this person. *mutter mutter mutter* Her chest voice is wobbly everywhere (I'm guessing she thinks she's doing vibrato?) and her vowels are all muddled (sounds like she's putting every single one of them in her nose?), and while her head voice is a bit better, she needs somebody to teach her to use it properly.

The hilarious part is that there are bits of it, especially in the higher parts of the song that she's bitching about, where she sounds just fine. With a proper teacher, and effort rather than bitching, she could nail this.

I love all the voice talk in this thread, it's so informative.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. I could have sworn that song was just exactly perfect for mezzo-soprano.

Sometimes I wonder whether mezzo-soprano is the bisexual of ranges.
It's either gay or straight, what's bisexuality? It's either alto or soprano, nothing between that.

I'm late to the party...but I kind of wonder why all the people responding missed that this was just a joke, exagerated for comedic effect. It was just a bit of self-depricating humor, not a comment on the song itself (even with the "Disney bullshit" lines, it still all seemed to me to be in good fun.)

There's a lot of good singing comments here, but I think y'all took a parody video a little too seriously.

lol i dont sing at all unless you count yodeling in the car but i probably would have reblogged something like that because i found it funny, not because i had any real attachment to it. i can understand why you're mad bc i get mad about stuff like that sometimes too (like when people put straw wrappers in the table toppers and when you go to clean the table you find the straw wrapper) but just know that the non-singer friends who enjoyed it probably werent trying to harsh your mellow and probably didnt even know that it would bother you so much!

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I never would have guessed people got so serious over this kind of thing.
