I swear to god I am not trolling. Whenever I go class I cross my fingers and hope the person who sits at the desk next to mine will be female, because every fucking time a guy sits next to me my nostrils are assaulted by a sudden blast of B.O.

EVERY FUCKING TIME.

because guys aren't encouraged to keep up appearances/hygiene as much as women are, and so once they're off to college and free from being nagged by parents, they are more likely to decide to forgo basic hygiene entirely. most of them will hopefully grow out of it once they realize that that's nasty and/or that other people actually do smell them and judge them for it.

I've seen messy rooms just as bad as the guys (the mess is just more likely to have a unified color scheme), people not showering unless they're going out for the night, pajama pants everywhere (this has changed a bit now that yoga pants exist).

The only reason you aren't complaining about girls' B.O. is because girls just tend to stink less.

Smelliest person I ever met was my old female roommate. So bad I wanted to gag.

And perhaps the male students are doing more physical stuff?

I thought they all smelled like Axe. I think I'd prefer smelling B.O.

Ah, this reminds me of one guy who smelled so bad he turned people away from an entire section of the library. It was horrible. He was in a hall that sat between me and the closest bathrooms. I would hold my breath.

But honestly I just think it's your bad luck. Both guys and girl can get rank when they think their sweet asses don't stink. Dumb college butts.

At my old workplace we had a guy who smelled so bad, people literally picked out the chair he'd been sitting on, in a breakroom with about thirty chairs, on multiple occasions.

At my old workplace we had a regular customer who sat in the same chair for hours almost every day (bookstore) and eventually my managers had to throw it out it smelled so bad.

This is like a mythical story to me. I've never been around or met someone who smelled THAT strongly. Not that I don't believe you, I just can't conceptualize it.

Ah, yeah. I had never encountered such a thing before I had to deal with this guy.

And I knew it wasn't a medical issue he had because I could see the dirt and grim on his skin and nails. He was using very expensive equipment that obviously belonged to him so he could obviously afford to shower. Really, it was just a washing issue. The issue being that he refused to do it for some reason.

Oh man, this reminds me. I worked at a gas station and there was this one woman who came in regularly who smelled so bad, you could catch a whiff when she walked in the door. Her clothes were visibly dirty and she never wore a bra or panties (her clothes were so tight, you could tell) and she'd always give me money from between her breasts. I was always worried it would show on my face that I wasn't too pleased with her sweaty breast money.

I used to work in a comic shop. I'm sure there were plenty of less-than-pleasant-smelling customers, but the only one I remember is a dude who routinely came in smelling so horrible that he'd stink up the entire store from one end to the other and drive the other customers out. For YEARS this went on.

At one point a co-worker finally had enough, called him up to the conter and said, "Man, what's with the aroma? You smell like two skunks fuckin' in an onion patch!"

oh god that reminds me of a guy in one of my classes who smelled SO HORRIBLE that everyone else would race to get to the class early and get the seats in the front so that we would be guaranteed not to be near him. You had to cover your nose when he walked in the room; once I ended up in the back of the room and he sat next to me and I honestly couldn't focus on the lecture because of his smell.
The sad part is that he was actually a friendly enough guy; he was just so stinky (and generally unkempt, always wearing stained, ripped sweatpants and having greasy hair) that no one would associate with him.

To this day I wonder if that was all some kind of social experiment.

had a customer like this at the bank i used to work at. he'd walk in the door and you'd be able to smell him from the other end of the room, which was a good 40 feet away. and his appearance wasn't much better -- greasy hair sticking up at odd angles, clothes torn and caked with dirt, shoes falling apart. never made much sense to me; guy wasn't exactly hurting for money.

helping him was torture. you'd basically have to try and hold your breath while he was with you, but if he had a lot of business to take care of, thst was im,possible. one of my coworkers nearly threw up once after he'd paid us a particulsrly long visit.

if he happened to have to wait in the lobby, we'd spray the chair he'd been sitting in after he left. it was a necessity.

Maybe you're not trolling, but you're certainly exaggerating. I went to college too, OP. Unless you're at an Ag college and they all smell of dung, or you're an exercise science major and every single one of your classes is right after every single gym class offered on campus, you're just full of shit.

Out of curiosity -- are they (and/or you, if you're in the same class with them) freshmen?

Because if they are, it's probably because for the first time, they're separated from their mothers telling them to take a shower. A lot of them grow out of it pretty soon.

Their parents aren't making them shower.

Seriously. I bet if you could do a scientific study you'd find that the dorm students are guaranteed to smell worse than the students who live at home with their parents and commute.

You got it in one. Also lots if college kids bathe but don't wash their clothes because it costs money.

In my experience both sexes smell equally bad and having that very special talk with your students about hygiene is not fun.

Really? It's not that way at my college. The guys here don't smell bad (that I've noticed). NGL though, this makes me worry I might smell myself...

Where are you going to college? The guys at my college didn't smell bad on a regular basis. Once or twice I'd get a stinky person (sometimes a guy, sometimes a girl).

But people in dorms can be super nasty and gross, especially in the first-year dorms when most of them are living away from their parents from the first time. The girls on my floor had some of the messiest and grossest rooms (leaving a cup of ramen to coagulate on the desk, for example. Also clothes on the floor, I could never do that to my clothes). One of the grossest examples was that someone kept leaving their used tampons IN THE GODDAMN PUBLIC SHOWERS AUGH. TAKE THAT SHIT OUT IN THE TOILET STALLS BEFORE YOU STEP INTO THE SHOWER.

I worked at a counter in a first-year (/freshman) residence at my school serving Asian food -- so lots of garlic, ginger, red chile flakes, right?. There was one guy I could smell over all of it, every single time. I'm good friends with a friend of his, and I had a reliable source explain he didn't bathe -- not even shower, bathe period. Or wear deodorant. Or really wash his clothes. It's not that he didn't have the money, he just... didn't. It was disgusting.

He was the one who led me to decide to never wear clothing on which the collar has started fraying in public (cause I didn't care, it's t-shirt, man). Even though it's cost me a couple of my favorites...

You think you have it bad? Try having choir practice right after the 120-man male choir has just rehearsed in that room.
