Re: Any workout or healthy living tips?

For the lunches, foods that are lean protein and/or high in fiber, and don't be afraid to explore herbs and spices. Dieting is easier when you're not starving all day or eating bland food. Have large portions of vegetables. (Nutritionally, corn, carrots and potatoes aren't vegetables.) Go light on carbs, even if you're eating wholegrain. No pop. Not even diet pop. Drink water or unsweetened tea.

I could defintely use more fiber. :P So try not to pick those 'vegetables'? Seems easy. Fortunately I only drink like....3/4 of a can of soda a week. 99% of what I drink is water with a crystal light addin.

Crystal Light is actually not great for you either. Low calorie sweeteners like splenda and aspartame trick your body into thinking it's getting sugar and releasing insulin. When that insulin is released, it doesn't actually have anything to work on, so it goes to work on whatever's available in your blood, making your blood sugar drop dramatically and increasing your cravings for sugar.

There's also research to suggest that sustained use of diet drinks may actually be responsible for insulin insensitivity that contributes to type 2 diabetes, though so far I'm not sure how well it's supported, despite being an intuitive outcome.

Stay away from those things. If you must flavour your water, do it by adding a little bit of real fruit juice (cranberry, lemon and grapefruit all tend to work well in my experience).

D: :( I hate how water tastes. Guess I will have to find a fruit alternative.

Just give it time. Your palate will become accustomed to less sugary food as you keep eating well, eventually you will find out that the taste of water is the best thing there is after a workout.

A lot of people dislike water because they're used to sweet beverages. Like the other comment said, give it time and your palate will get used to it. Try adding a squeeze of lime or lemon.

But avoid fruit juice, it's full of sugar.

Pure fructose might not be good for you either. There seem to be a correlation between people getting pancreatic cancer and the high amount of distilled fructose they consume as a food additive. Stick to brown sugar or honey or syrup as sweetners, I say.

DA-brown sugar is white sugar with molasses added back in. Basically, all forms of concentrated sugar should be consumed sparingly. It's no more healthy to guzzle maple syrup or honey than corn syrup. Maybe some trace minerals, and raw local honey may help people avoid allergies to local plant pollen, but that's about it. (Don't remember if agave syrup actually has more sweetening power for fewer calories, I think so, but it's still not calorie free or anything.)

Anything with artificial sweeteners (like Crystal Light or most of the stuff marketed as a diet drink) aren't very good for you, either. Studies suggest that they might actually work against you when it comes to dieting, because it tricks your body into thinking it's about to get a major calorie dump (as you would from sugary foods/drinks) and then you end up being hungrier because your body doesn't get what it expects.

Water hydrates, is cheap/free, and has no calories.

The water instead of other drinks thing really does help. Combined with some relatively small diet changes (more high fibre, more fruit and vegetables in general, and MUCH less pre-processed food) and with mostly just consistent walking exercise every day, I think it's helped keep me at a stable weight for the past two years.

I mean, I'm still soft all over and slightly tubby in the middle, but I've a load more energy, better sleeping patterns, and my weight has been rock-steady at 10 stone/140 pounds for two years.
