Any workout or healthy living tips?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-31 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
So my sister and I are trying to lose weight. I lost 20 pounds last year by walking more. I now have a gym to go to (we have been going 5 times a week). We stick to cardio. Since we can't afford a personal trainer, any tips?

Also any tips for yummy, healthy lunches we can make the night before to take to work? Stick of smart ones.

For some workouts and help tracking food numbers I'd suggest DailyBurn.com. Here's a good review of the site:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yxga_jGOGbQ

This Youtube channel has a lot of workouts from 5-30 minutes designed to get certain results (Beyonce's butt, Victoria's Secret Angel body, ect) or to burn off a particular number of calories (an 8 minute workout that will burn the 150 calories of a krispy kreme):

Right now we are just using Zombies Run! to track workouts. We tried spark people for abit.

I have no particular goal other than to lose weight.

For the lunches, foods that are lean protein and/or high in fiber, and don't be afraid to explore herbs and spices. Dieting is easier when you're not starving all day or eating bland food. Have large portions of vegetables. (Nutritionally, corn, carrots and potatoes aren't vegetables.) Go light on carbs, even if you're eating wholegrain. No pop. Not even diet pop. Drink water or unsweetened tea.

I could defintely use more fiber. :P So try not to pick those 'vegetables'? Seems easy. Fortunately I only drink like....3/4 of a can of soda a week. 99% of what I drink is water with a crystal light addin.

Crystal Light is actually not great for you either. Low calorie sweeteners like splenda and aspartame trick your body into thinking it's getting sugar and releasing insulin. When that insulin is released, it doesn't actually have anything to work on, so it goes to work on whatever's available in your blood, making your blood sugar drop dramatically and increasing your cravings for sugar.

There's also research to suggest that sustained use of diet drinks may actually be responsible for insulin insensitivity that contributes to type 2 diabetes, though so far I'm not sure how well it's supported, despite being an intuitive outcome.

Stay away from those things. If you must flavour your water, do it by adding a little bit of real fruit juice (cranberry, lemon and grapefruit all tend to work well in my experience).

Anything with artificial sweeteners (like Crystal Light or most of the stuff marketed as a diet drink) aren't very good for you, either. Studies suggest that they might actually work against you when it comes to dieting, because it tricks your body into thinking it's about to get a major calorie dump (as you would from sugary foods/drinks) and then you end up being hungrier because your body doesn't get what it expects.

Water hydrates, is cheap/free, and has no calories.

The water instead of other drinks thing really does help. Combined with some relatively small diet changes (more high fibre, more fruit and vegetables in general, and MUCH less pre-processed food) and with mostly just consistent walking exercise every day, I think it's helped keep me at a stable weight for the past two years.

I mean, I'm still soft all over and slightly tubby in the middle, but I've a load more energy, better sleeping patterns, and my weight has been rock-steady at 10 stone/140 pounds for two years.

Lunches: stirfry is good re-heated and you can make a bunch and portion it out for the week or a few days. Rice, veggies, lean meats if it's your thing. Nice and filling and simple.

Gym: does your gym have any classes you could join? Maybe mix it up with some yoga or weights or anything that'll just change it up a bit. Variety is good for you and keeps you interested.

If you're looking for at home workouts I have a bunch of links to free youtube vids and stuffm but not sure if you want those?

...You just reminded me that I haven't had stirfry in a while! Gonna have to make some soon. :)

The only class they have is Zumba. Maybe once I lose a bit of weight and become less self conscious I will join it. But I hate looking at that mirrored wall in front of you when in that room.

I'll look into stir fry. I love rice and chicken. Could probably find some nice veggies and spices to add in. Fortunately I got plenty of tupperware!

Don't stick to cardio. You will lose more weight, keep it off longer, and be healthier in general if you add strength training every other visit. And no, you won't get "too muscular"; it takes years of extremely dedicated training, diet, and supplementation to develop the kind of muscle that would actually make you bulky.

You don't need a professional trainer, just don't be shy and ask a gym employee or someone who goes regularly how to use a machine if you can't figure it out.

I will have to figure out some strength training to work in! Should I do like 20 minutes of strength and 30 minutes of cardio each day or like alternate days?

+1 to both your points, though especially about the strength training. I started noticeably loosing more weight when I started strength training just with 2 pound weights.

Just keep going

The thing that trips up most people--hell, it's the thing that trips up me--is that it's so easy to just not go.

Whatever you decide to do, keep doing it.

I am hoping that with 3 people going (me, my sis, and her BF) we can keep each other together. I'll have to find some other ways to keep us going.

For the food, I'd say find things that can be eaten "in pieces"/don't have to be eaten all at once. Eating a lot of small snacks throughout the day instead of a few heavy meals was (most likely) a large component of a drop in my weight.

For breakfast oatmeal is good. If you don't like the texture maybe try steel cut oats, takes a little longer to make but not as mushy. I like to make oatmeal with orange juice instead of water, then you don't have to add sugar. Sometimes I throw in a few craisins and walnuts with orange oatmeal. Another way to avoid adding sugar to oatmeal is to dump a handful of blueberries in. Another thing I like to make for breakfast is a vegetable heavy (bell pepper, spinach, tomato, onion, whatever you like), meatless, oven baked frittata. Plenty of recipes for it online.

Like people above said, veggie heavy stir frys are good but try and season them with spices and not sauces or at the very least read the nutritional panel if you buy the sauce pre-made. You can easily undo the point of a stir fry with an unhealthy sauce.

Hummus is cheap, tasty, and pretty easy to make at home. To save money you can sub the tahini for peanut butter, a lot of people I know prefer it like that. Hummus is really tasty in wraps with spinach, onion, and tomato. Or you could get a little box of tabbouleh or couscous, mix in some cucumber, spinach, tomato, onion, and a little feta then top with hummus and you have a tasty cold work lunch.

Overwhelming your dishes with vegetables is really the best way to go no matter what you make.

If you have a microwave at work I like to broil chicken, onions, and tomatoes drizzled in a little Italian dressing and dump them over a small amount of noodles. Another thing I like to make that seems to hold up in the microwave is grated carrots, onions, and frozen spinach sauteed with a little barbeque sauce in a lightly fried (olive oil and patted down with a napkin) tortilla shell. It might sound weird but it is tasty and you won't really miss the meat.

Warm soups tend to feel more filling per calorie to me so I recommend looking up healthy vegetarian recipes (you can always add a bit of chicken if you really want it).

Oh and juice might seem healthy but it is a real calorie sink so watch out for that. :)

I have been drinking fruit smoothies in the morning? Is that bad? Real ones. I use frozen fruit medly + fresh bananas + almond milk. I don't add anything else. I usually drink a cup and a half of it.

I like an egg or two for breakfast too. It's pretty easy to scramble an egg and add it raw to hot oatmeal right after it's out of the pot. Also, one of my easy lazy breakfasts is a bagel with a fried egg, salsa and cream cheese. It can usually keep me happy for 5 hours.

Use fresh fruits (including the "veggie" fruits - tomatoes, cucumbers, etc.) for snacks. Soups are good too. Not the heavy creamy type, the lighter, not too greasy kind. If you are buying the store or canned soups, watch out for salt content. I find them to be on the heavy side usually so I dilute them and use them as base for my own soups.

There are toning/strengthening exercises you can do at home too. I like doing sit-up and stuff between readings. Calisthenics, yoga, taichi, whatever. They don't (usually) need any external equipment to perform so I find it easy to switch between work and exercise.

If you either can't make it to the gym, or just want to work out at home, there's a pretty neat app (for android at least) called Nike Training Club. It's free, and it's aimed at women. They have a whole bunch of workouts, each one is 15, 30, or 45 minutes, and categorized by cardio, focused work, or strength training. Most of them are "do this move for 30 seconds to 2 minutes, then the next one" and so on. They do assume you've got a set of dumbbells and a medicine ball, but that's all you need.

Food-wise, I'll do stir-frys a lot when I want something quick and healthy. Spinach+shrimp is my go-to, since it's super easy. I'd also recommend looking for easy vegetarian recipies, since those are often lower-calorie and higher-nutrient than standard recipes. Add tofu or chicken to get more protein, since that helps both build muscle and keeps you full longer.

30 Day Shred!!

(Anonymous) 2014-01-31 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred works, makes you feel and look great and strong, and you can do it in 25 minutes a day (including warm up and warm down) in your own house. All you need is some hand weights. It's pretty cheap to buy in shops, but I think it's also on the torrents as well.

Here's Level 1 on youtube if you want to see what it's like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Pc-NizMgg8

(If you get done with this, I can also recommend Jillian Michael's Ripped in 30)
