*high-five*

Any favorite villains you like to see this done with?

In fic Loki and Magneto are my biggest lures for this trope atm, but I find it hard to find good Loki redemption fic because I am far pickier with him than most other villains I like(I think it's because the popular woobification of Loki in fandom(that I don't have a problem with, people like what they like) runs contrary from how I enjoy him).

In TV and movies as shit, man so many villains that have gotten a redemption arc I have loved. It all started with Darth Vader. Curse him.

In a similar vein asshole characters learning how to be less assholish is another killer trope for me.

I'm definitely with you on Loki; my id wants so badly to see him redeemed, but it can't be too easy, because he's only in-character if he's fighting it and getting in his own way at every step. I'm not particularly bothered by the woobiefication either, but redeeming Loki is a lot more complex and difficult than a lot of writers want to make it.

I almost mentioned the redeeming-asshole-characters thing in my own comment upthread. It plays into a lot of the same emotional hooks for me as villain redemption, but I think it doesn't occur to people nearly as often.

IF you guys like redeeming jerks, that's the go-to trope in Korean Dramas. XD They are usually like mini-series length soap operas, with all the attendant addictiveness, and of course the narrative devices and tropes can be off-putting to someone outside Korean culture, but they do this ALL THE TIME. "Loving a good woman makes an asshole want to be come a better man". I'm so weak for that lol

Yeah I definitely agree with you there, the main reason I like Loki is because he is such a fucking vicious little shit who is the root of his own problems but a lot of the time it's glossed over or he's written, softer? I guess is the only way I can think of describing it. And I can't really see that so a lot of the time it doesn't work for me.

I find asshole-redemption even more hit and miss than villain redemption. Either the character is written too nice to begin with or they're still far too mean by the end of it. This actually applies to my current fandom tbh because the character I love the most(Nick) is a huge dickbag but so few fics hit the sweet spot where he's still a git but clearly cares for his team.

Snape used to be the go-to character for redemption arcs. Now that Snape's arc is canon, it's Loki.

I was actually disappointed they didn't go there yet with Loki in the last Avengers movie. But then I thought about it and I was mightily releived instead. There would be no point in ficcing him a redemption if it actually happened. So - more fanfic to enjoy.
