He's right.

And it's not really surprising that he would believe this, either. What were the people getting angry expecting him to think?

For context, Miyazaki is right in the middle of the naturalistic tradition of Disney -> Japan -> Disney (via Lasseter) which is all about acting the performance and working from life model study. (Even when they're exaggerating the scene, they're exaggerating from real life studies, less from the cartoon tradition.)
