Yeah, that was OOC for her. She should have been, "We need salt NOW!" After all, she was the one who believed in demons and didn't try to dismiss her memory of witnessing them as a brain trick like Abby. She should have been on the ball. I am surprised in all of her travels, she never came across anything weird or at least a demon in the flesh.

Well I'm not going to immediately cry 'bad writing'--the SH writer's room appears to be pretty unified, without the lack of communication that leads to a lot of inconsistent character writing. There are plenty of supernatural explanations for Jenny suddenly displaying hesitation, along with things related to "It was always only me in danger, I don't know how I feel about being responsible for the lives of other people inclusing my sister".

If it's never resolved I might cry "why" along with you, but for now it seems like there's probably a reason.

Trauma can fuck a person up, OP.

I love Sleepy Hollow, but I feel Jenny's character writing is an issue they're not handling well so far. She seems to go from badass action heroine to scared little sister for no apparent reason.

I respectfully disagree. I think her characterization has been pretty reasonable since she's going through a ton of changes during the course of a short time. And it's not that they flipped a switch and now all she is is a scared little sister. I just think it seems like she's a badass who is, at times, frightened (especially for her sister).

It feels a bit inconsistent to be, but these things are subjective of course. Anyway in my opinion SH has managed to "fix" some flaws along the way, so I'm looking forward to next season and what they'll do with the characters.

Oh same here, no doubt. :)

I agree - she's been through a lot, she has now found out her sister's the target of a demon and she's going to have to stop the apocalypse.... That's kinda daunting.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. It seemed weird to me at first because in the beginning, she was the one who always believed in demons and had more experience than Abbie, yet Abbie seemed to be the one coming up with all the ideas for how to battle them. If Jenny was the savvy world traveler like she's initially described, then that would be like teaching your grandmother to suck eggs.

I don't know. I love the show and the whole cast is adorable but this seemed kind of sloppy to me.

It's not like she suddenly forgot that she's faced all sorts of dangerous crap. She faltered at the prospect of facing one very specific demon that terrorized her personally for years. Characters are allowed to be emotionally affected by something they have a personal stake in.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
This.
She's still a capable badass, but she also has fears that can affect her emotionally.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. That situation was very personal in multiple ways. I think it makes perfect sense that it would scare her.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I actually like her better in later episodes. She's more human, less invincible supernatural 007. In the last few episodes, I felt really warmly toward her because she made good moves, she made mistakes, she was desperate sometimes and funny at other times. And she was great in her interaction with Irving's daughter.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
She was GREAT with Irving's daughter, but that's what made it weird, IMO. In that scene, she's smart and capable with lots of insight and warmth. She and the girl bond big-time, it was fabulous. And then later, all of that barely gives her a pause before she declines to help save the kid?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Her entire character makes no goddamned sense. Literally none. This show is just not realistic with it's development. Why on earth would she be thrown in an asylum after talking with the cops? Has anything like that ever happened in America at any time past the 19freakin'50s? No. No it hasn't. She travels all over the world for this man? On her own? Really? She's never once gotten into any issues? Or maybe run into any foreign governments? If she's so great at dodging government organizations then how did she manage to get herself jammed into an institute to begin with? How did she even get out to do this espionage bullshit in the first place?

It just doesn't make any logical sense. None of the character development is A+. Plotholes. So many plotholes!

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's a supernatural procedural. It's not supposed to be, I don't know, The Wire or something.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
There were Moloch's forces (specifically the female doctor who committed suicide) keeping her there because she kept her memories of Moloch and they didn't want that getting out too early. And after that Jenny escaped, stole things, told them about supernatural forces etc. so it was easy for them to keep her locked up, especially with no-one advocating for her.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's not like she wasn't institutionalized as an adult, she was barely a teenager when she did first go in and has been pretty much in a revolving door (as we learn later that it was done by will). Plus from what the show said, Jenny was going around talking about what happened in the forest which no person would believe in and think that Jenny was severely unhinged from the scenario.

Plus what Abbie said earlier in the series, their parents were one who were gung-ho in institutionalizing Jenny after the incident.

Plus why is it important that she travels alone? She was already an adult and already honed by her time in the streets so she knows how to handle herself. Women travel alone all the time, the hell? It's not like Corbin could travel with her considering his job and looking over Abbie as well.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
You're missing an important part of the traveling alone. Jenny wasn't backpacking across Europe, she was hunting down information Corbin needed about the four horsemen and the coming apocalypse, work that the series has already established as very dangerous since it attracts the attention of the demonic forces. On the non-paranormal side, it's clear she's also dabbed in arms running and other illegal activities, which is also not a stroll in the park.

A woman who does all that by herself with no back up who suddenly quails at the thought of saving a little girl... well, that looks OOC.

She says that, at times, she got herself *intentionally* locked up so that she would not go and hurt her sister. She wasn't sporadically crappy at dodging the government - she used the government to lock her up somewhere secure when she felt she was endangering her sister. It takes a bit of mental somersaults to separate this from the fact that, when she first showed up, she was pretty pissed at Abbie, seemingly for being locked up. But that was really more for Abbie's betrayal of her in the past.

You can definitely be put into a psych ward after speaking to the cops. All you have to do is say something that indicates you're wanting to hurt yourself and/or others. (Just having mental health issues is not enough.) They'd usually be required to get you into a ward to be evaluated, at the very least. And that's without supernatural or demonic influences.

"Sleepy Hollow" actually has a lot less plotholes than 90% of shows involving cops.

I read that as being an aversion reaction because of her own dealings with that demon, a sort of don't want to look at it, don't want to think about it, and a not-unreasonable fear that given half a chance that thing will get her again.
