Another Book Thread!!

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2014-02-05 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
What are some books you would love to erase from your head to reread again?

For me it is ALL of Robert Cormier's books. And Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World.

Wizard's First Rule. Most of the rest of the series is preachy and bad, but I really love the first book. The ending gets me every time, and I'd love to read it again without remembering.

Harry Potter. I'd love to read the series again without remembering either what happens or all the fandom stuff.

I really wish that I had read the Harry Potter series when it first came out. Instead of after being spoiled for everything.

Warren Ellis' Crooked Little Vein. There's a vicious humour to it that just screams out to me to be read.

I looked at the summary of that book. Still don't understand what it is about. It looks like a cracky kind of spy/thriller/crime novel?

Pretty much. It's got that special Warren Ellis touch.

Harry Potter. I've read them so many times, the magic is almost gone.

I'd also like to reread all of Tamora Pierce's books with no memory of reading them the first time, since I read them hilariously out of order.

I can't think of an example, but also books I approached in the wrong frame of mind or mood. Lolita, maybe. That was not a good book for fifteen year old me to read.

I think many people are going to say Harry Potter (a book series I still have not read).

I'm not really someone who cares about being surprised. I tend to enjoy things even more the second time when I know the secrets and can look for clues that I missed the first time. So for the most part I don't think this question is for me. But some old sensational novels are really fun and I haven't tried rereading them yet, like A Long Fatal Love Chase and Lady Audley's Secret.

HOW DARE YOU NOT LIKE SURPRISES!!!

What are sensational novels? Based on the titles I am thinking romance of some sort?

I have never read Jurassic Park. Is it very different from the movie?

Jurassic Park was good. I haven't read it in forever.

Connie Willis' To Say Nothing of the Dog. Gradually watching everything fall into place was magical the first time. I still love it every time I reread it, but I'd love to experience that amazement again.

Hm. I tried to find a summary of it. Is it a thriller? Or Mystery?

I've been trying to find that after it was recced a while a go! I've been hoping for the library or the couple used bookstores in my area, but I just may have to turn to Amazon.

Ooh that is a good book. I need to do a reread.

Most of Timothy Zahn's books. They tend to have...not a twist ending, but a lot of the elements that have been building up in the book coming together in an unexpectedly cohesive way. I'd love to have that moment of "OHHHH, I get it!!" on all his books again.

That is why I want to read Cormier's books again. I LOVE his twist-not-twist endings.

my favorite Dean Koontz books. I like the 'middle era' best, e.g. Watchers, Lightning and Twilight Eyes. Granted, I haven't read them in awhile so it might be like I was reading them for the first time again.

Jurassic Park and The Lost World

!!! Another Dean Koontz fan! Everyone I know prefers King, but I LOVE Dean Koontz. I LOVE Watchers. That part where the Outsider is carving the eyes out of people's photos. And when Einstein and the Outsider think Mickey Mouse is real. ;_;

I also love The Face and Velocity. And The Door to December.

The Flat Earth series by Tanith Lee. Or, well, almost anything by Lee.

The Last Unicorn by Peter Beagle.

It's been over ten years since I read either, so it'd almost be like reading them 'new', except I've read them so many times in the past, I'd be waiting for my favorite scenes, and.

Whine.

Don't you hate that? I also will sometimes skip to favorite parts. And then be like, Damnit.

kryptoncat: Sokka is yelling "To the library!" That was an awesome episode. (READING IS BASICALLY AWESOME YOU SEE)

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. (But then I'd be disappointed again by how it ends.)

A Series of Unfortunate Events. (But then I'd be disappointed again by how it ends!)

His Dark Materials series. (I hated the entire last book why do I want to re-read them, why?)

Ah well, here's some books I want to re-read that never disappoint: Howl's Moving Castle, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, the Wayside School series, and most mystery novels so I can have another chance to figure out whodunnit before the main character does.

I used to read A Series of Unfortunate Events with my little sister! I don't remember how it ends...
