Who really cares if it's racist, anyway. Listening to music isn't going to hurt anyone. You just have to avoid letting some people know, if they're the type to give you a hard time or hate you for it (or maybe not, those people might not be worth it, anyway).

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, um, except for the time I totally got caught listening to this one song I liked, not for the racist message (which I didn't understand, I didn't speak that language), but because I just liked the sound of it, and I got the side eye hard and was never spoken to again. People do make assumptions after all.

WHY THE FUCK IS THE CAPCHA MAKING ME THINK. AAAAAAGH. NO MATH. BAD CAPCHA.

Someone never spoke to you again? And what song?

Hi, fellow Viking metal fan. I feel your pain.

As long as you acknowledge it, I don't see a problem.

"Viking metal" sounds so fucking AWESOME (as in, the title, I've never heard any samples). I am disappointed if this is racist.

Though that reminds me of a news article about ethnic nationalism in Scandinavian countries. I think I've heard that they use Vikings for their racism, which is sad, because I legitimately like Viking history (and I'm of Norwegian descent).

Viking metal IS fucking awesome and not all bands are racist.
Here's a great band from the Faroe islands that have lyrics about Norse mythology and sagas:

I think anti-Christian views are more prevalent than anything in viking metal bands than racism, anyway.

Edit: Heidevolk is p. mythology/nature based in the lyrical content too. TL;DR: Not all viking metal bands are pompous dicks, here's another rec:

Can you rec some of the anti-Christian ones? I'm a Christian but I like hearing criticisms and I've been wanting to look into more metal in general too. Though I usually prefer symphonic metal.

Some of it is, some of it isn't. The thing to remember is that a lot of viking metal, and indeed black and death metal in general, come out of Scandinavia, which has some long-running nationalist movements.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-10 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
I want to toss a rec for Sig:Ar:Tyr in here, even though they're from Canada...

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Music is music. I just wouldn't buy their albums or go to their concerts because I wouldn't want to give people like that any money.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I don't give them money. Nor do I recommend them to others. I guess I don't always check whether they're racist before I listen. I'm white though and I guess I'm not personally hurt by it. Idk..

I'm similar—I love Viking metal and especially neofolk. (FWIW, I'm Jewish and have relatives who died in the Holocaust.)

Both to appease my conscience and to be properly Viking about it, I always pirate this music.

[personal profile] chronophage 2014-02-09 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to hope that the majority of folk (to a degree, depends on the band), viking, black, and extreme metal fans take the lyrics with a grain of salt (if they even bother reading translations, or if they're in English or something) and don't actually subscribe to the messages that the bands are promoting.
That said, the majority of metal is puffed up to sound ~*hardcore*~ and sinister so, ehh.

Eternally laughing at Taake, but goddamn if I don't love Hoest's music.

I can't listen to that shit. Or NSBM in general if I'm being honest. There's too many bands out there for me to waste my time on racist sacks of shit.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-10 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
OP Well I guess I try to avoid upfront NSBM (I'm not sure if Kroda counts tho) but a lot of Viking metal bands have kind of dodgy lyrics if I take the trouble to translate them. By then I like their music and wonder how much it matters. As someone else said, a lot of the time it seems puffed up. But then, I'm not personally harmed by it. But I'm not sure if I'm harming anyone either.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I wouldn't even be legally able to own some of that stuff so I don't even try listening to it.
making_excuses: (Default)

[personal profile] making_excuses 2014-02-10 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
You do that, you aren't the one who have to live with them around you...

Edit: Actually I take that back, you know what racist want? Exposure and attention, it doesn't matter if you give them money or download it illegally, you are giving positive attention to racists! You are in their heads supporting their case. So they can show others "look how many people listen to our music" we are obviously correct in our way of thinking. THIS IS HOW VIGRID keeps going, no matter how hard we try to shut them down, this is why Breivik was surprised when he got only negative attention for killing those he killed, this is why racism is on the rise in Scandinavia, why we get more and more conservative politicians in power and why we are letting less and less people across our borders.

So no you might not give them any money or understand what they are saying, but in a small way you are contributing to something quite bad.

OP Thankyou, I will consider what you said. I think I need to translate some more lyrics of bands I like to see what they say. I'm learning Norwegian...

The thing about metal is that you often have no idea what the singers are singing. Like, the band I'm listening to now could be singing about their groceries, or they could be singing about genocide.

Y'gots to do your research.

Johan Hegg cheers people on to sing along at shows by saying that "It's death metal, no one knows the lyrics anyway!"

So yeah, very true.

It sucks ass when you find something that sounds nice and then you learn what it really is. I've taken to researching a lot before listening to anything new in a certain segment of metal because that sort of stuff makes me feel too bad. There's also the fact that some use the singing about their own culture in a positive or at least neutral way (just as themes for their songs), and some are...that. I wish there were some sort of list of all metal groups where people could flag them if they're unsavory people that you don't want to support...
