"Viking metal" sounds so fucking AWESOME (as in, the title, I've never heard any samples). I am disappointed if this is racist.

Though that reminds me of a news article about ethnic nationalism in Scandinavian countries. I think I've heard that they use Vikings for their racism, which is sad, because I legitimately like Viking history (and I'm of Norwegian descent).

Viking metal IS fucking awesome and not all bands are racist.

I think anti-Christian views are more prevalent than anything in viking metal bands than racism, anyway.

Can you rec some of the anti-Christian ones? I'm a Christian but I like hearing criticisms and I've been wanting to look into more metal in general too. Though I usually prefer symphonic metal.

It's mostly anti-Christian in that they were pissed that the Christians came to their land and started trying to people. I'm not sure if the bands actually practice a pagan religion or if they just use classic paganism as lyrical content.

I think it's mostly that I don't have my glasses on (and somehow, lack of vision always equates to lack of mental ability for me).

I've also just kind of fallen out of love with a lot of the more theatrical folk metal bands and no longer retain as much information about them. Once you listen to enough styles of metal I swear the only genres you're capable of listening to is the really weird shit.

"The really weird shit" describes my taste in like everything. Books, movies, music. Not that I don't like other stuff too but I always get people commenting on how weird the stuff I read and watch and listen to is.

Finntroll does that whole thing, but on the other hand their whole act is basically musical troll roleplay in which the band members are singins as trolls fighting for their land against the christians coming to eradicate them, so I'm willing to give them the benefit of them being characters and not actually holding those views. As far as you know, are they actually like that behind the characters?

BTW if you look into more bands through genre styles, the folk, pagan, and viking metal genres are usually pretty interchangeable.

One of my favourite bands actually has lyrics (in Gaulish) about Gaulish history and the Gaulish wars. (not Viking but still really neat)

Absolutely more prevalent, and a lot of that is because of its roots in black metal. Norway had a spate of church burnings in the 80s and early 90s that were perpetrated by the black metal scene at the time.

The black metal scene are a bunch of regressive assholes. The best thing to happen to black metal was Darkthrone stopped taking it seriously.

I just don't enjoy their Vigrid and other racist groups ties, and the fact that they are prone to doing illegal stuff, I don't actually know much about the music itself, only what follows.

I assume that not all black metal (or any Metal) bands are like that...

The metal scene in general is prone to jackassery (it's why I got out of it) but the BM scene... even the non-racist segment has had its share of heinous shit. :/

Some of it is, some of it isn't. The thing to remember is that a lot of viking metal, and indeed black and death metal in general, come out of Scandinavia, which has some long-running nationalist movements.
