I seriously doubt Hange was meant to be "agender" but for what it's worth, the author seems to be really progressive and amazing in terms of gender equality between his characters, and I honestly think he treats the male and female characters identically. Not to put down Japan, but society's views are still pretty rigid in terms of gender roles and that often reflects in the media, but if there's one thing to be said about Attack on Titan, I don't think any character is defined by their gender. So, yeah. Hange is probably a woman, but I don't think the author would care if you want to interpret her as agender either.

I also think he does a great job of writing female characters. It's essentially the reason why I love Shingeki no Kyojin so much, as I tend to gravitate towards female characters. Isayama isn't a saint, but I really don't think he gets enough credit for it. I mean, I just feel I have to defend him for that.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed! I love Attack on Titan, but don't think it's perfect in terms of storytelling. That being said, the way he is portraying gender roles (read: not portraying them at all) is amazing, and rare even for an anime. None of the women are sexualized, everyone basically wears the same outfit, the women are JUST as strong as the men (with Mikasa, a woman, being noteworthy as the strongest in Eren's class), none of them are cooing over men, the only canon couple (with screen time) has been lesbian and, iirc, (spoilers) the only one to be sexually molested at this point has been a boy.

When it comes to gender, there's not much there to criticize.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
But Mikasa's the strongest in the class because she's Asian (Japanese, of course), which is a whole other problem.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol I agree that Mikasa's Japanese-ness is portrayed as super special snowflake and is an example of typical Japanese back-patting in manga... but I wouldn't say it's a problem, per se? The idea that she's the last "Asian" makes no sense, but the series is written by a Japanese person so I'd hardly say it's a fetish thing or whatever. (and I'm not sure how Mikasa's strength is directly tied to her Asian-ness in the manga? it doesn't even seem to be an important point, aside from her kind of cringe-worthy backstory)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I think if "Asian-ness" meant strength, her mom wouldn't be dead. It might be that he wanted to make the one Asian character strong?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-10 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's not a fetish thing, it's a nationalism/ethnocentrism thing. The Japanese character is superior because the author is Japanese. That's what I meant by it being a whole other problem.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-10 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
And I agree, Japan does have an ethnic-nationalism problem. Absolutely. I just mean, isolating how it is portrayed in the manga, is it a problem? She isn't even the protagonist. She isn't even a likable person by her comrades (except in that Jean has a crush on her). It's a weird backstory, the "last Asian" thing, but she's not even been the hero so far, and everyone else is presumably White. The strongest character isn't even her, it's Levi. So... yeah. I agree with what you're saying in theory, I just don't see it as inherently problematic in the manga itself.

lol mte

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, It's especially great that none of the women are sexualized in a manga with horror/gore elements because the genre often has really gross stuff.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad that the only sexualized character is Armin. That scene with the molestor guy was marvelous.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
nyart

Is it bad that that scene made me love the series more? Not only because Armin is so adorkable and I thought he was a girl for the first like, nine episode (totally get your mistake, molester dude!... I am horrible.), but on a more serious note, because it wasn't actually a girl being molested, which is 99 times out of 100 the case in this genre of anime.

This scene was gross but not in the way I was thinking about (stuff like fanservice poses of women while they're being killed/tortured) and was just supposed to be horrifying and scary.

Although I'm not sure what the fuck Isayama was trying to add to it in chapter 54 and why.

More girls would be into it if the molester was attractive, got to admit.

Re: my trolling detector is forever broken

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably yeah and I'm not denying that some will use this scene as fetish fuel but with the way it's portrayed I feel like that's not the author's intent (well, at least I hope so) contrary to other scenes like this I saw with girls in some manga.

nayrt

I am sure it was just supposed to be disturbing, as the manga is meant to be. Especially considering, I assume, the series has been targeted at guys (though I feel like the fans must be pretty close to even?).

That being said, it wouldn't shock me if the author was aware that this would inspire lots of kinky doujinshi/fanart/fanfics from his female BL fans. I mean, it's not exactly a rare fetish. Not saying he's selling out or whatever, but you can't be completely unaware of what you do... usually..

Did you read the latest chapter yet? The guy who molested Armin literally told him "I used to be straight, you turned me into this (a guy who gets a boner with a boy) Take responsibility". All of this with a lewd face.

I thinks Isayama's intentions are pretty clear.

Re: my trolling detector is forever broken

(Anonymous) 2014-02-10 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, I just read it. lol

Honest question: Is Armin gay? It seems like the only character's sexuality we know is Ymir and Bertolt who has a crush on Krista. But Reiner, Ymir suggested he might be gay in the tower, right? And Armin, idk, that scene with Jean putting a hand on his shoulder in this chapter finally converted me to Jean/Armin. Then again, Jean has a crush on Mikasa, so...

am I greedy for wanting a canon gay character, even when there's a canon lesbian? lol

Re: my trolling detector is forever broken

(Anonymous) 2014-02-10 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Actually is Ymir and Reiner who has a crush on Krista. Bertolt has a "crush" on Annie (Although we only knew that since Reiner pointed out Bert always stare at Annie).

And no, you're not greedy. I want my canon lesbian too.

It was arousing for me (and for a lot of people), I have a thing for traps being molested. Oh, and I'm a woman, so it's okay for me to have this fetish.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-10 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
>traps

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
The latest chapter made me laugh. "I thought you were a girl, so now I'm gay."

Of course I could be misunderstanding the translator's wording.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-10 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
The translation I read was something like, "I heard you're actually a guy. I used to be normal, but now you've made me this way..." *lewd gross face* He didn't use the word gay or anything, though that's probably what he meant.
