At this point, I don't even care what Isayama intended.

I'm just going to read them as female, like I did before I ever encounter the shitfest known as the AOT fandom.

What? Can someone tell me what the story with this is?

I like the idea of Hanji being agender. But I also like the idea of her being cis too - not because media needs more cisgender representation - but it is nice to have cisgendered woman character who doesn't look very conventionally female

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Isayama got fanmail asking about Hange's gender, his reply was "if you can't figure it out yourself, I won't even bother telling you" (= peeved that his drawings didn't make her gender clear enough. Fandom took this comment to mean Hange is trans/agender/genderqueer/whatever and some people went apeshit with it

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
If you want to think of Hange as agender, it's totally okay OP and I don't think Hange would judge you !

I'm not sure Isayama said that to laugh at the fans though, because apparently he also said that they could interpret his other characters the way they want.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's a continuation of the joke, though. "You actually believed that Hange thing? Fine, now none of the characters have genders! Let's see where you go with that one!"

I could be completely wrong, of course.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually agree, because in previous interviews with Isayama he was clearly poking fun at the people unsure of Hange's gender with his vague answers.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get why people think Isayama wants to laugh at the fans. He's not Hussie. You can see by the way he treats his male and female characters that he makes a great effort to avoid shuffling them into "female character" and male character" boxes. Of course he'd jump at the idea of taking it further and making a character's gender ambiguous to the viewers.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really. He just depicts them in a non sexist way. But men are still men and woman are still woman.

"Of course he'd jump at the idea of taking it further and making a character's gender ambiguous to the viewers."

I think that's kind of a stretch. He probably wouldn't actually care, but jump at the idea? Japan is still leagues behind the West in terms of gender equality, sexuality issues and LGBT stuff. I'd say he's very progressive for Japan, but an agender character would be expecting a little much.

I seriously doubt Hange was meant to be "agender" but for what it's worth, the author seems to be really progressive and amazing in terms of gender equality between his characters, and I honestly think he treats the male and female characters identically. Not to put down Japan, but society's views are still pretty rigid in terms of gender roles and that often reflects in the media, but if there's one thing to be said about Attack on Titan, I don't think any character is defined by their gender. So, yeah. Hange is probably a woman, but I don't think the author would care if you want to interpret her as agender either.

I also think he does a great job of writing female characters. It's essentially the reason why I love Shingeki no Kyojin so much, as I tend to gravitate towards female characters. Isayama isn't a saint, but I really don't think he gets enough credit for it. I mean, I just feel I have to defend him for that.

The only reason it became a thing in the first place was because Hange doesn't dress/act feminine and Isayama's art is so bad you can't always tell so yeaaahhh...

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
That sums it up perfectly. Agender/nonbinary Hanji is my headcanon, but I don't think that was the intention.

At least we'll probably never get anything directly proving us wrong. If anything, Isayama is telling people to think what they want.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
What makes me go all eeeeh at this headcanon is that I see too many gender-essentialist reasons behind it. "She acts so much like a man and not a traditional feminine lady!"

I think the best clue that he is at least part trolling is that he told the publisher to "at least use both male and female pronouns equally". To me, he just has a lot of fun confusing the shit out of everyone by now.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-10 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, it's not only that interview where Isayama said he wouldn't confirm Hanji's gender.

This is from the official english kodansha tumblr:

http://kodanshacomics.tumblr.com/post/73207971230/hello-i-wanted-to-ask-you-guys-a-question-about-attack

Hanji is the only character this applies to, that's why people say Hanji is gender fluid. Isayama wants people to use male/female pronouns equally.

I'm of the mind that if you're going to read non-gendered Hanji as canon because of the lack of pronouns you have to do the same thing with everyone else in the series.

Do what you want with your headcanons but I thought the manga and anime were pretty clear with the fact that she's a woman.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-10 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care what the intention is. If I can interpret a character as nonbinary I'm going to. Because I want nonbinary characters
