What makes me go all eeeeh at this headcanon is that I see too many gender-essentialist reasons behind it. "She acts so much like a man and not a traditional feminine lady!"

That's pretty much why I hate 99% of those trans-headcanons.

Agreed. It's definitely enforcing a strict gender-binary if a female character who doesn't act in a feminine manner or doesn't look feminine is immediately perceived as not female gendered. I do think that agender characters need more representation but so many agender headcanons for characters come from very problematic gender-essentialist notions, like you've said.
And seriously, enforcing a strict gender-binary is problematic when it comes to any progression with gender issues at all.
