[Philip Seymour Hoffman]

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Really? That's the role you most associate with him?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
It's the role he was partway through filming at the time of his death. Why is it odd that it would be the first one on someone's mind?

I don't think so. It's a perfectly valid thought to have, OP, especially if an actor really has "made" the role. A loss being mourned can be fairly specific.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
If I don't know someone, their death does not affect me at all. It will affect the movies I watch, so I care about that. This probably makes me sound heartless, but it isn't just celebrities. I was not saddened at all by the death of my half brother I only met once.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
+1

I find it hard to muster up any empathy beyond a brief "Oh, that's sad" over the death of a person I've never met. I don't think it's heartless, I think it's normal. It's just not practical to go around spending time and energy grieving over people you don't have any personal connections to, otherwise all you'd be doing is feeling sad over people who died.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I had the same exact thought.

I feel bad, but not too bad. It's not like I knew him, and I'm sure all the people who love him are fulfilling the grieving quota.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Same.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the same.

I don't feel bad, tho

I'd just watched Catching Fire the week before and was very excited about Mockingjay so that was my second though after "Aw, that sucks" as well.

For the record, apparently most of his scenes in Mockingjay have already been shot. They're not replacing him.

OP

I feel strangely relieved.

I heard they are actually going to digitally recreate him for the scenes that weren't actually filmed (there were one or two apparently where he was needed still). I heard that this offended some people. I honestly don't see the problem - better than recasting, or altering the story.

don't worry, all the other 12-year-olds on tumblr had the same reaction

OP

I was thinking of submitting a secret a while ago with the same concept, but decided not to because it was for a much less known fandom and I'd feel too obvious. Suffice to say I felt weird even thinking of admitting that my first thought when I heard about a natural disaster was "omg is so-and-so famous-person-who-lives-there okay I don't want his show to get canceled".

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
You are not alone, OP. I thought about sending this same secret in.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I knew someone would send this secret in.

I had the same reaction, because I don't know the actor from a bar of soap, not even his name, before he died and heard he was the dude who did that role. I don't care about an actor more than anyone else I don't know who died.

It is sad, and I definitely amended my thoughts after my initial reaction to reflect that someone had died, and died from a stupid fucking drug overdose, because the US has criminalised heroin making predictable doses impossible to obtain.

* The US pressured most of the world with threatened embargoes if they didn't criminalise recreational drugs too. They also criminalised alcohol for a while too. I think heroin is a really *shitty* drug to be addicted to and no one should be but it is NOT fatal just like morphine unless the dose is higher than expected which happens when it's illegal. Harm minimisation and open treatment options, not concealment and criminalisation. /soapbox

I just feel bad that I had no idea who he was when they mentioned the name. And when I went to IMDB to see if maybe he was just one of those actors where I don't connect the name and face, I've only seen him in Twister and Mission Impossible III and I don't even remember him in MI:III.

:/

I'm sad (in a sort of 'man that sucks for his family/the people who loved him' way) that he's died, but I feel like I'm missing out on why people are acting like the biggest actor since slice bread died. ._.

That was more or less my first thought, not gonna lie, and I felt similar to how you did when you realized it. But just remember that we can't always help our first reactions to a situation and at least acknowledging the fact that it's not the most compassionate of first thoughts shows that you're still a caring individual.

He was one of my favorite actors and I'm very sad about his death and I couldn't help this thought crossing my mind either.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
I had no idea who he even was. I still don't think I've ever seen him in anything. Sad though, very sad.

You're not alone by a long shot, I've heard a lot of people asking that. Honestly I was hoping to eventually see him play the Penguin in someone's version of Batman. But neither of those things was my first thought.

My twitter timeline was freaking out about his death, and when I looked up what movies he had played in and saw he had done the hunger games, I knew instantly that that is why they were upset. And then it really bothered me that they acted like the greatest actor of all time had passed away when really they wouldn't have known he had existed if it wasn't for the hunger games.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you, OP.

I felt the same way when Richard Harris died, including wanting to cringe at myself knowing he had an illustrious career on both film and stage, and the thing I cared about most was "but.. but.. DUMBLEDORE!"

(Michael Gambon tried, but Harris is my Dumbledore.)
