(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 04:59 am (UTC)(link)I find it hard to muster up any empathy beyond a brief "Oh, that's sad" over the death of a person I've never met. I don't think it's heartless, I think it's normal. It's just not practical to go around spending time and energy grieving over people you don't have any personal connections to, otherwise all you'd be doing is feeling sad over people who died.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 12:08 am (UTC)(link)I feel bad, but not too bad. It's not like I knew him, and I'm sure all the people who love him are fulfilling the grieving quota.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 12:47 am (UTC)(link)I had the same reaction, because I don't know the actor from a bar of soap, not even his name, before he died and heard he was the dude who did that role. I don't care about an actor more than anyone else I don't know who died.
It is sad, and I definitely amended my thoughts after my initial reaction to reflect that someone had died, and died from a stupid fucking drug overdose, because the US has criminalised heroin making predictable doses impossible to obtain.
* The US pressured most of the world with threatened embargoes if they didn't criminalise recreational drugs too. They also criminalised alcohol for a while too. I think heroin is a really *shitty* drug to be addicted to and no one should be but it is NOT fatal just like morphine unless the dose is higher than expected which happens when it's illegal. Harm minimisation and open treatment options, not concealment and criminalisation. /soapbox

I'm sad (in a sort of 'man that sucks for his family/the people who loved him' way) that he's died, but I feel like I'm missing out on why people are acting like the biggest actor since slice bread died. ._.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 11:51 am (UTC)(link)I felt the same way when Richard Harris died, including wanting to cringe at myself knowing he had an illustrious career on both film and stage, and the thing I cared about most was "but.. but.. DUMBLEDORE!"
(Michael Gambon tried, but Harris is my Dumbledore.)
