John/Mary/Sherlock OT3.

I really love the dynamic, but sadly visually/sexually they don't really work for me that way.

These three are my new fave ship.

No one can convince me that Mary isn't poly, and that Sherlock doesn't already consider himself a part of that marital unit.

This.

TSOT was more about Sherlock and John declaring their love and vowing to be BFFs than it was John/Mary - we didn't see their ceremony at all. We didn't even see their real proposal.

I'm pretty sure season 3 just spurred a lot of adultery fic, actually.

/major squick

My favorite ship isn't fully canon, but I've never seen OT3 as a satisfactory way of resolving that. I don't find the idea squicky or off-putting, but OTP means OTP, to me. Old-fashioned, I guess :P

If I like two characters together, it means I like those two characters together. "Hey, the more, the merrier!" doesn't make me feel better about my ship being sunk.

I don't know about OP, but for me, OT3 isn't about "resolving that", "feeling better about my ship being sunk", or about "the more, the merrier". Sometimes I like two characters together, because I like the dynamic between those two characters. Sometimes I like three characters together, because I like the dynamic of those three characters together. An OT3 isn't just about adding an extra set of genitalia into the mix, or about trying to "resolve" a noncanon OTP by adding a canon ship. OT3 changes the relationship in a really unique and interesting way, how the characters relate to each other, play off each other, and depend on each other.

OP

Pretty much this.

Well, fine, YMMV and all that, but there ARE people in fandom who seem to think that a trio is a solution to ship wars or a solution to a love triangle, and that's of no comfort to people who just like A & B together, period.

What you're talking about (three characters who already have chemistry), seems to be a separate question from "Don't be sad that C has broken up A and B, just ship All The Things, silly!" which is indeed an opinion I've encountered.

Good luck finding any, and if you, do good luck finding any of quality :(

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Why is this a secret? This is a pretty popular opinion among people I know. If you look at that tag on AO3 there's quite a bit of fic. (Some of it written before S3, true, when we knew she was coming but hadn't met her yet). It runs the gamut, too, from fluff to heavy angst. I like the funny smut the best of all.

I agree with you, OP. The three of them are adorable together. I haven't squeed this much over an OT3 since Parker/Hardison/Eliot.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
As a rule I don’t like OT3 (or more) because poly is a huge squick for me, but in this case I agree with you. Not because I like the three of them together in the traditional sense, but because by the end of last season I came to feel that they deserve each other, and not in a good way. Mary’s an ex-freelance assassin who shoots people so that her husband won’t find out she was a hired killer and leave her. John is the husband so desperate or detached that he doesn’t recognize this for the psychotic and abusive behavior it is and stays with her. Sherlock also shoots people so John won’t leave Mary and encourages him to stay with her because he’s so obsessed with John and John's happiness that he makes Dean Winchester look like the picture of perfect mental health by comparison. All three of them are freakin' nuts. So, yes, I support sticking the three crazy people together so that Molly will have a shot with someone nice like Lestrade. And no one else will have John or Mary inflicted upon them as a partner.

Yes, I definitely see them together. Trapped in that room from No Exit, with just each other to torment with their psychotic, abusive, codependent nonsense, thereby saving the rest of the characters in that universe from the train wreck a relationship with any one of them would be.

I hope you realise how problematic being squicked by poly relationships is.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Squicked might be the wrong word, but it's not wrong to find the idea of a poly relationship offputting. People have their preferences.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
How it is problematic? Unless you live in a culture where you're required to participate in such relationships, I don't see why it would be a problem. If not, you like what you like and you don't like what you don't like.
