What do you want to have a resurgence of popularity?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2014-02-12 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
What cartoons/TV shows/movies do you want to become popular again (not reboot but original version)?

For some reason I really want Rainbow Brite to come back. I don't remember actually watching the show that much, but I get impressions of "happiness and color" when I think back on it. I'd also like the original My Little Pony. I had an old movie of it on VHS that I loved!

And Rugrats because it was (and still is) my favorite cartoon growing up. I still think of quotes from it when I hear certain words. I friggin' love those babies!

I've been bitching and moaning for people to pay more attention to M*A*S*H for about a decade.

I know a lot of people (young and old) who watch M*A*S*H. One of my friends in college lovvveedd it.

I love M*A*S*H. Love it. ...But I love Scrubs a little more, and that's essentially its spiritual successor, imo.

MASH was one of those shows I watched every morning before going off to school. Whenever I hear the theme song I immediately look around for the TV and my dad's whistling because he would whistle along when it aired.

Cyberpunk like the genre? Can you give me some like...books or art work? The only thing I can think of for cyberpunk is like...the people in Batman Beyond.

This. Cyberpunk is hands-down my favourite sci-fi genre.

...Seriously? You want us to go back to the trench coats and leather boots cyberpunk of the 90's? I fail to see how that's relevant these days, although Deus Ex seems to be doing a pretty good job of not letting it die.

Re: What do you want to have a resurgence of popularity?

I think it'd be difficult to bring back because it is so relevant - so near future as to be tomorrow, not 20-40 years from now as it was in the 80s and 90s. That removes some of the sci-fi, and a lot of the wonder and terror. You'd have to push it further along, explore some new paradigm.

Almost Human is pretty much literally 80s cyberpunk, but it comes of as campy more than anything else, 1) because "artificial intelligence becomes sapient - robots/cyborgs have feelings just like us!" while one of the oldest and most cherished tropes of the genre has been ridden into the ground so hard it's neither surprising nor particularly interesting for the audience, and 2) it posits the future as a crime-ridden hellhole (with cyborgs and all powerful corporations) when we now know what actually happened is that violent crime rates have plummeted.

Well maybe when CD Projekt releases Cyberpunk 2077 there will be a resurgence in Cyberpunk stuff, or when the people who made Deus Ex: Human Revolution continue down that continuity.

Babylon 5. It has a surprisingly active fandom for being as old as it is, but I'd love to see it become really popular.

Yeah, I recall it being fairly popular. Sci-Fi shows (and movies) seem to have fandoms that last longer than others. I wonder why...

I know ultimately as a franchise it's dead, but Redwall. Replay the episodes again or something.

Redwall has a TV show? Are you talking about the books about mice?

Star Trek TNG. I'm years late to the party and I want so, so badly for the fandom to be a huge thing with epic wank and shipping wars and meta and whatnot.

Sweet Jesus I swear we are clones of each other.

Dungeons and Dragons cartoon. That was one of cartoons I was most excited for on Saturday morning.

Dangermouse. I remember watching it and whenever they used a British phrase or word like Lift or Flat I'd ask my parents and they explained it to me. It was my Intro to British culture 101 as a kid.

For years I've wanted He-Man and She-Ra to be popular again. Maybe Jem, too.

I wish Reboot was popular (again). This show was basically the ATLA of my childhood, and all I really want is to get a proper DVD release, talk about all the cute "technobabble" names they could fit in, these goddamn tears from Enzo and the fighting game episode, how OTP AndrAIa/Matrix is, and have meta/fic offs be a thing that happen. But it's so old, and it came out before having a huge internet fandom was a real feasible thing.

G.I. Joe. Yeah, yeah, I know--dated politically incorrect imperialist Cold War toy commercial propaganda, second-rate animation, yadda yadda. Don't care. I loved the ridiculous over-the-top characters and plots.

Jackie Chan Adventures. We've got a small fandom going now, but my happiness in life increases exponentially relative to the number of new people who get into it. And dammit, more people need to talk about this show. It was excellent.

It was never a hue fandom to begin with but, Last Exile. I would love for the fandom to become huge, even if it brought on a a lot of crazy wank.

All my favorites I want to be more popular are all pretty much British historical dramas no one's heard of. I know there's never going to be a fandom for Wish Me Luck because it aired around the time I was born (1989) and I don't know if it ever even aired on US tv. Basically imagine Bomb Girls and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (the miniseries) had a baby who took names and kicked ass all over occupied France. It's primarily about women, there's a ton of femmeslash potential (especially the first season), and it's really suspenseful. If this were made today, it would have a fandom for sure.
